Welcome to the 2014 MTF Favourite Players Thread :)

This year there won't be a seperate thread for active and retired players but please make sure that you post a Top 10 for your favourite active players and a Top 10 for your favourite retired ones.

Like always you have to name at least 5 players or votes won’t count.

It would be much appreciated if you would include reasons for your decisions but it’s not a requirement.

Of course you can only vote once for the same player.

Please make sure before you are going to vote if you have already mentioned your players before.

It's easy to check if you have already posted in a thread: Just click on "search this thread", advanced search and write down your name under "search by user name".

Here is how the points will be distributed:

#1 = 10
#2 = 9
#3 = 8
#4 = 7
#5 = 6
#6 = 5
#7= 4
#8= 3
#9 = 2
#10= 1

Re: MTF 2014 Favourite Players Thread

No problem.

Thanks for participating this year :)

I predict a huge bump for #Stanimal this year! #bandwagon
He is doing good so far indeed

All-time:
1) Roddick
2) Sampras
3) Federer
I considered to add the option for such an all-time list but then I thought it would be too much to have 3 sections.

Give the title to Fed already  so NID ;)
Nothing is for sure ;)

Damn near impossible to keep the retired list to 10.
Usually it's the other way around and people find it difficult to keep the active list to 10 names.

Note that both Nadal and Federer appeared together in "top 10" only for 4th time (if I am correct) and all those 4 posters are Nadal fans. :)
It's easier to appreciate Roger when you are a Rafa fan :p ;)

Thanks for mentioning this :)

Retired:
1. Nicolas Kiefer
2. Iván Navarro
3. Fabrice Santoro
You have to mention 2 more players as it is required to name at least 5 players :)

Favourites

2. Rafa/Andy (Can't really decide between them)
You have to decide for one of them, otherwise I can't count your vote ;)

*If Robin doesn't count for retired yet, all below him rise a spot in the Retired list, then #10 is Fernando González. Then, Robin goes in the Active list, at #4, and all below him fall a spot.
As long as Robin hasn't officially announced his retirement he will belong to the active players :)

1. Dimitrov - it's clearly the player I've been following the most last year.
2. Bellucci - he's a mug, but he's from my country and is a very nice guy.
3. Wawrinka - upgraded him to 3rd because of today's title.
4. Federer - downgraded to 4th cause I want him to retire and stop ruining legacy ASAP.
5. Bautista Agut - first time I saw him play vs. Delpo, really like it. Takes Nando's spot as my fav spaniard.
6. Del Potro - it's impossivel not to like the Gentle Giant.
7. Gulbis - downgraded him a bit, cause of some disappointing matches in Slams.
8. Berlocq - so much heart, what a fighter.
9. Janowicz - crazy Jerzy, tennis needs more guys like him.
10. Thiem - saw some matches, like his game a lot.

Re: MTF 2014 Favourite Players Thread

Retired - it's very difficult for me to do this, since I wasn't really a big follower of tennis in the 90's. But let's do it, a top 5, cause top 10 is too much, I would be forcing.

1. Kuerten - best brazilian player ever.
2. Krajicek - beat Sampras at Wimbledon, always like it Dutch players and teams (football, volleyball).
3. Rafter - best style of tennis I've ever saw.
4. Nalbandian - so sad he's gone without a slam.
5. Norman - not much of playing, more cause of coaching Soderling and Wawa.

Honorable mention --> Soderking, let's face it, he's retired.

2. Krajicek - beat Sampras at Wimbledon, always like it Dutch players and teams (football, volleyball).
:wavey:
Must be hard though, we have so many mugs and crappy teams.

1. Djokovic - my personal GOAT, but oh, well..
2. Wawrinka - joined the bandwagon since AO 2013 last year, what a match. Fully deserved slam win today.
3. Ferrer - for sheer fighting spirit. I reckon he's a big twat off court, though.
4. Tsonga - for clownishness and the volleys.
5. Del Potro - typical Argentinian, good guy.
6. Gasquet - for his near perfect one-handed backhand.
7. Nadal - though I liked him much better in his capris.
8. Isner - for being a mental giant.
9. Kohlschreiber - for his shotmaking ability.
10. Nishikori - for his potential greatness.

Honorable mentions:
Hewitt, Mahut, Sijsling.

Dishonorable mentions:
- Dimitrov: seems to fail every time.
- Federer: legend, but I hate his aura and the way his fans and people who don't know tennis think the sport's nothing without him.
- Murray: horrible on-court attitude.

Active:

1. Simon - Tactically superb, love his cerebral approach and he seems like a top guy.
2. Llodra - The last of dying (dead) breed and a complicated character.
3. Fognini - Most alpha tennis player you'll ever see.
4. Nieminen - Ah, if only he had a big serve...
5. Haas - Guaranteed entertainment, whether GOATing or imploding.
6. Dolgopolov - Complete headcase but always interesting.
7. Benneteau - I would give anything to see him win a title.
8. Ferrer - A testament to hard work.
9. Hewitt - Still has the desire when he could've retired a long time ago, got huge respect for him.
10. Robredo - Balls of steel, far better to watch than MTF believes, a classic clay courter.

Retired players:

1. Malisse - Outrageously talented, always lit up the court. Will miss him for years.
2. Gonzalez - As bad as his backhand was seeing him unwind that forehand was always a thrill.
3. Moya - Was my fave growing up.
4. Bruguera - Clay courter to the extreme.
5. El Aynaoui - Great character, the tour could do with someone like him nowadays.
6. Nalbandian - When he was on, only Federer could rival him in quality and aesthetics.
7. Schalken - Unorthodox would be an understatement.
8. Kafelnikov - His backhand is always overlooked. Lives like a king these days.
9. Chang - Biggest fighter I've seen on court.
10. Rafter - Absolute joy to watch unlike many of his contemporaries.

Re: MTF 2014 Favourite Players Thread

Active Players:

1- Nadal - the GOAT
2- Del Potro - I liked him more when he was a mental giant. Now he's a choker but still like him. He is a nice guy though.
3- Hewitt - I've always liked his game, his personality, his fighting spirit and his C'MON!! AO 2005 was the best GS ever, mostly because of his epic matches.
4- F.López - Very entertaining to watch.
5- Fognini - Clown, but nice to watch. I became his fan after his fantastic winning streak in Sttutgart, Hamburg and Umag last year.
6- Djokovic - I used to like him more, but some of his clownish attitudes on court are a bit tiring to watch.
7- Wawrinka - He is a good example that never is too late to win your first GS. Very nice guy.
8- Zeballos
9- Simon

That's all. I will add one more just to complete the list.

10- Kittipong Wachiramanowong

Retired Players (I started to watch tennis in 2002 so i'll make only a Top 5 for this):

Active only... will do retired later:

1. Jerzy Janowicz - this guy is so fun to watch. Win or loss he is always so passionate and also has a great game for his size.

2. Novak Djokovic - Nole is an amazing guy on and off court. He is so nice to his fans and I was so grateful to get my pic with him at WTF. His defense is sublime and so is his ability to change direction on shots.

3. Andy Murray - I do not think you will find a more genuine guy in Tennis. Andy is so true to himself and has never let success change who he is. He is funny and witty. I love his counter punching style.

4. Juan Martin Del Potro - Juan is a gentle giant and I have loved watching him for a while now. I love how he can be on the defence for a while and then just rip a running forehand winner.

Those guys are my main favourites and I really do not have an order for them myself in terms of rankings so it was hard to place them. Jerzy will need the vote most.

5. Tomas Berdych
6. Gael Monfils
7. Donald Young
8. Ross Hutchins
9. Dustin Brown
10. Jonathan Morgan (Groove)

Honorable mentions to David Marrero, Fernando Verdasco, Leander Paes, Radek Stepanek, Lukasz Kubot, Robert Lindstedt, Colin Fleming, Dom Inglot, Treat Huey, Jamie Murray, John Peers and Johnny Marray on the doubles side of things I wish there was a comp for doubles teams.

Also honorable mentions to Thannasi Kokkinakis and Nick Kyrgios the future of ATP and both who I am following with interest.

More singles guys I could have voted including Youzhny but 10 is all I can vote :(.
