It is more complicated than that I'm afraid (as it always is!). First of all we have to clarify what age we're talking about. If we're talking young (student age), so girls say from 18 to 22, then it is true that assholes (let's define it as confident guys who know how to play the game and will just fuck the girl a few times and leave), will get more girls than the gentleman, sweet guy. I've seen this so many times in my travels around the world when I was younger. And you know what, many girls just find themselves in that situation where it's the first time they're unsupervised and just want to risk and have fun. Then maybe one or two assholes are enough and from then on they start looking for nicer types. But the "assholes" know how to spot these situations and are there to get these girls. Now as women get older, they discard assholes (they are not stupid) and look for nicer guys (and yes money in many cases). But it's unfair to call some young girls hoes, just because they are inexperienced imo. Did it piss me off that this super hot Argentinian girl I was dying for gave it to that smooth operator in the hostel who was with a different girl every 3-4 days? Sure it did. Did I think she was a hoe? Nope, just blamed my dad for not telling me the secrets of the game

However, ovulation can make the choice between dads and cads particularly challenging. Research has revealed that during ovulation, women show a weakness for masculine men with high-quality genes. Studies consistently show that fertile women prefer men who display macho facial features and social dominance. In other words, they like bad boys. Building on these findings, Gilda Biebel of the University of Konstanz and her colleagues reasoned that evolution may have also favored men who went to war. Consequently, they wondered if aggression might also be a signal of genetic fitness.
Aggressive behavior comes in two forms. The first is “reactive–impulsive,” which are responses to external threats. The second is “appetitive-aggressive,” which is internally motivated. It is derived from the intrinsic pleasure that is associated with violence, hunting, and combat. In keeping with studies that have found women's preferences for “bad boys” and socially dominant men for short-term mating, the investigators wondered if appetitive aggressiveness might also be an advertisement of good genes. They also speculated that women may be drawn to truculent men during ovulation, when the interest in short-term mating for good genes is at its peak.
In order to test whether fertile women would show a greater preference for warrior types, Biebel and her team conducted an online survey of 1212 German women. Participants read a fictional scenario of a soldier named “Wilko” who had returned from fighting a war in Afghanistan. From here, the women were instructed to complete three tasks. First, they had to consider Wilko for different types of relationships (i.e., a date, steady boyfriend, life partner, platonic friend, sexual affair, and one night stand) along a seven-point scale from 0 )(not at all) to 6 (most intensive). Second, they rated this fictitious soldier on a seven-point scale along the dimensions of: dominant/submissive; sexually attractive/sexually unattractive; soft/hard; feminine/masculine; rugged/delicate; tough/tender; bad/good; warm/cold; nice/awful; pleasant/unpleasant; friendly/aggressive; unintelligent/intelligent; and healthy/ill. Third, the women reported where they were in their menstrual cycle, in order to assess whether or not they were ovulating (they also identified if they were taking oral contraception).
What did the researchers find? Women preferred aggressive men as short-term mates, and particularly during ovulation. This finding builds on previous work demonstrating that women find male characteristics such as dominance and masculine facial features especially attractive when they are fertile. What's more, this study shows that the male signals of genetic fitness are not just physical, but behavioral as well. At the same time, it is important to underscore that these men were preferred as short-term mates. Dominant men who derive pleasure from being aggressive deliver scant relationship benefits because they pose a threat to the family, show decreased parental investment, and have affairs. Consequently, and as expected, the women in this study preferred less aggressive men for long-term relationships.
What can we learn from this study and related efforts? Most women are naturally passive and submissive when around men. Men who exhibit traits of aggression and decisiveness, will naturally attract these women, because their personalities will mesh properly.
Passive submissive women will not be attracted to chill nice quiet guys. They don't flow together.
Aggressive ball-busting business women will also not be attracted to aggressive/decisive men. They'll be the one's that want the quiet chill guys.
The issue is that there's a lot of chill quiet guys, and very few aggressive women. So the chill quiet guys don't actually have enough supply of women they mesh with.
Meanwhile, there's plenty of women for "asshole" guys to mesh with.

Women are not attracted to assholes, rather they're attracted to good looking assholes but they will never acknowledge that. If an ugly guy tries to be an asshole, he'll just be dismissed by women as rude and subhuman.
When you are goodlooking, you can get away with murder. Take the classic example of Ted Bundy or Richard Ramirez, both looked like slayers and even after they were convicted of unthinkable crimes, they were still pursued by hot women and received hundreds of letters when in prison. Now contrast that with a killer who is ugly and he does all the crimes that they did, they would probably get a beatdown in prison let alone receive letters from women.
Looks beats everything, anything else is just pure cope. When you are good looking, life is on ez mode. You get validation from the most beautiful women, you have social power because everyone wants to be connected to you, because of social contact, you get referred to people in the know and thus land a well paying job. When you are ugly, you are always working for it, you are not living life to the fullest, rather you're just covering for your weakness by working long hours, not receiving female validation and social status.

The "women are attracted to a**hole's" myth is basically just an excuse many men use to feel sorry for themselves. If you put in the proper effort working on yourself finding a wife/gf is fairly easy. The world is full of millions of guys with dad bod,non flashy cars and average jobs who somehow find a way to get a woman. Definitely their are some minor exceptions to the rule like for women in LA/Miami or Men in China/Alaska where they are at a numeric disadvantage in the eligable dating pool, but by a large when people are in rut dating their is something within they should evaluate instead of blaming other people or the other gender.
The women that like that kind of men are the looking for thrills. They don't want boring man and quite often they find normal man boring.
