If you play as a robot, as a machine, bang bang bum bum from any position, under any circumstance, without having (for obvious reasons, called GENETICS) the right body to do so, your “career” can only lean towards a specific direction.
On top of some other things that someone else highlighted.
Either way, not a good look for a recent #1.

Sinner's win against Dimitrov Is legit but Alcaraz's in Cincinnati and this one are not. Weird stuff.
All those were legit, only people who don't understand tennis and injuries state otherwise.

Only one of those was an injury though
But in each case, one of players had problems with his health/body that prevented him from playing further.

The way the two young titans sacrificed Shanghai 1000 for Beijing 500 and Tokyo 500, is meme material. Hopefully both are fine and learn from this.
I don't think Alcaraz cares so much. He didn't lose much, especially after Sinner retired so early. Shanghai looks like a mess, and he might've actually made the right call (in hindsight).

Sinner, of course, has lost a lot more - and probably lost any chance of ending the year #1 (which was relatively slim anyway).

To me, Sinner looked a bit strange since the beginning of the tournament. He didn't blast Altmaier away as he usually does against opponents of that calibre, and had already showed some signs of fatigue. Against Griekspoor, he was even more strange. He started showing emotion on few occasions and even made sarcastic gestures a 'la Djokovic towards his team once or twice. Totally out of character.
If I was a fan, I'd be worriedo_O.

While Djokovic has now an open path to the title

Chess not checkers

Not really. Alcaraz went to Tokyo for the big phatttt appearance fee (doesn’t need the points). There was a reason him and Sinner were strategically placed in different 500s that week – more $$$$$$ for both of them! It’s the same reason he played Laver Cup ($$$) and the same reason he’s playing Six Kings Slam ($$$). Can’t blame him really.

Alcaraz was very smart to skip this tournament, another proof he is not obsessed about weeks at number one BS statistic that all it does is worsen players health.

It's cramps. That's the good thing but the bad thing is he seems prone to cramps in a hot and humid condition. I once had cramps in both calves, playing tennis in this sort of condition.

This is not nonsense. Griekspoor has the game to be a top-10 player. He is just a headcase. With the right coach, he can pull a Wawrinka. But he doesn't care about winning titles.
He especially seems to play well against Sinner. He's got something against him. So does Altmiet. These two cost Sinner the tournament by running him ragged.

Alcaraz sacrificed nothing. He secured the ATP 500 Bonus Pool and one million dollars with it. Shanghai was much more work for the same prize.

Yeah.. win 5 matches in Tokyo and you get the title & 500 points.

Win 5 matches & you make the final of Shanghai (in a tougher field) and you get 650 points.

Much of muchness in some ways.
