Rafael Nadal defeated Mariano Puerta in the final, 6–7(6–8), 6–3, 6–1, 7–5 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2005 French Open. It was his first major title, the first of a record 14 French Open titles, and the first of a record 22 major men's singles titles overall. Nadal won the French Open on his tournament debut, the first man to do so since Mats Wilander in 1982, and was the youngest champion since Michael Chang in 1989.

Barely turned 19 when he won this. Had defeated Federer a couple of times already (and should've won Miami in 2005 from two sets up).

When you consider what Alcaraz has already achieved but he's a little short currently in slams it's incredible the heights Nadal achieved so young and just been a relentless march since at RG.

Nah, Courier and Federer "achieved" this too, with the latter doing it twice (Korda and Cilic also had doping suspensions).

Teenage Nadal was a prodigy. Nobody will come close to what he achieved U-19. This is a very underrated match as Puerta was a whisker away from forcing a decider. For all the people who call him a doper, I think he was forced to forfeit everything after this match, so it must have been a legit run. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong about his doping situation.

Note that the Wilander AOs (83-84) (Edberg also 85) are the last slams of the season and take place in November, not January

Which doesn't change much anyway, I don't think Wilander at 18 years and 5 months ready enough to win a slam on grass, even under rated... and even if he learns quickly..

It's better to win beating Kriek (double holder), McEnroe and Lendl on the road, than Gittlin, McNamee and Denton, even with a few more months, with all due respect :)
