Is Nadal the fittest athlete ever, all sports considered?

He is capable of going for power and long rallies/matches at the same time.

For example, in athletics, Usain Bolt is muscular but he only runs short distance events. Marathon althletes are skinny. So there is an antinomy between explosive power and stamina.

In cycling good climbers(who are skinny but have good stamina) are usually not good sprinters(who are muscular but less strong in mountain stages)

But Rafa can do both simultaneously (topspsin power + defensive running/stamina in long matches) His has a body-builder shape but he can still have good stamina and running speed. Does this make him the fittest athlete ever? Tennis is really honored to have an athlete like him.

this. tennis is one of the most taxing sports out there in terms of endurance. a long distance runner is fit but they do not have to repeatedly change direction suddenly and do things that are rough on the joints. a boxer is very fit, but generally they can guard and preserve energy if need be, which you see happen often even with great champions

skiiers and swimmers and the like are very fit but, again, often for short distances time wise when in contrast to tennis.

he has to be in consideration for one of the fittest athletes in all of sports in history. how do you deduce the 'fittest' though, I don't know. it's difficult when comparing different sports and athletes of different times. I do know that it obviously takes a lot to slide around and switch directions and speed in all directions for 5 hours, something he's done many times

he's in the conversation for sure in terms of this question

Don't know if Nadal is "fittest ever", but you are right about something. To have extremely high stamina (probably the best ever in tennis), while being an exomorph is certainly unusual. Usually an athlete is very strong, or has very high stamina. The two types of fitness are usually mutually exclusive (most endurance athletes are skinny, and strength/acceleration athletes are stocky).

Of course Rafa is a Spartan, so we should expect unusual things from him.

You think Nadal is a fit athlete because he is cut and has a tiny bit of muscular definition? Kid, go away.

Nadal is a good athlete, nowhere near better than Djokovic, but a good athlete none-the-less. Interms of his natural fitness? NO. He is nowhere near.

And if you wanna compare to other sports, then you need to be aware of the UFC, cycling, triathletes etc.

I know this might come as a shock, but I don't even consider Nadal an athlete. Period. He is a just runner who can't stay injury-free ... no different than a couch potato who can't find a couch.

Rafa is to tennis like pro wrestlers of WWE to real wrestling. Looks impressive beating homeless American players but clearly faking

not really. a 'runner' wouldn't automatically be capable of changing direction so well and constantly like he can. Nadal has a great ability to not only run for a long time but also manipulate his body into awkward positions to successful shots. just looks where he manages to fight great angles and shot with his forehand when on the stretch or nearly falling down

your post and its comparisons don't make much sense though anyway. and you not considering Nadal an athlete isn't a shocker, but its a very stupid thing to say.

again though I will reiterate, tennis is widely considered one of the more taxing sports physically in the world because it is a grind that takes a lot of out of the players involved. if Nadal is arguably one of the fittest or fittest tennis player ever then he certainly deserves a spot in the discussion of fittest ever athletes in general. Like I mentioned in another post though, its something that is impossible to compare. you can't take a person who competed in the Olympics 30 years ago and compare them with Nadal today. there are just too many variables

IMO, Pro tennis players are among the very fittest athletes. Nadal, due to his many serious injuries, is not consistantly the fittest tennis player. At his healthiest best though, he may be. Overall, Federer is one of the fittest tennis players of all time, certainly the fittest of the past 15 years.

what's with all the smart asses on this board lately? obviously Nadal is probably the fittest player of his generation. Federer stays healthy, yes, but I think you are mistaking lack of injury with exceptional fitness. Roger is a great example but he isn't exactly a gladiator when push comes to shove and things last a long time. look at his 5 set record. sure, part of that statistic has went down due to playing in later age but he never was the best marathon man around and certainly isn't the strongest or quickest
