I'm the opposite. I find Baez' reaction refreshing. I'd like to see more cheering when opponents make an error. Otherwise we are just asking players to hide how they feel on court and behave a certain way which is mostly fake
I think he finds it distracting. It'll be the same debates about grunting as well. I don't think Baez means it in an unsporting way as it is merely a sign of his competitive spirit but it can come across that way.
In men's table tennis, the case of Tomokazu Harimoto comes to mind. The guy is known for very vocal "cho!" (often accompanied by trophy fist pumps) celebrations every time virtually he wins a point, even if it is off an error from his opponent. Now "cho" celebrations are common in the sport but he takes it to another level of volume and force (plus, the distance across the table is 3-4m only). It's annoying for the casual viewer so I think it must be to the player facing him, though these celebrations occur between pts only. Interestingly, Harimoto is also one of few guys who will applaud great shots from his opponent and is usually very good at the handshake even in defeat, quite humble really.
Something has to be done about loud grunting. Constant and unnecessary vamosing or come ons should be addressed as well but at least it doesn't interfere with the point itself. Not an easy task for the chair umpires.
Fognini said something similar in some interview recently, that the new generation doesn't have respect for the older guys, they just scream into your face after you miss shots etc.
I didnt watch the match but doing it regularly is poor sportsmanship and highly obnoxious. Those who have played players like that in big matches know what I'm talking about. It's ok every now and then, or on big points (eg. bp, sp), but it's unacceptable if it becomes the norm. And yes, it does show a lack of on court maturity and respect for the opponent.
Totally agree with Marton. And can’t with people crying “ he should see himself first”. The guy never claimed he is the best in the world, he is just annoyed how he is trying to give his best and someone is like mocking him. I didn’t know you should be in top 3 in the world to be able to express your feelings, MTF!
