Players who just can't seem to stay physically healthy. Medical timeouts, match retirements, event withdrawals, surgeries, etc. Who have we got on the list?

#10 ·
Withdrawals from AO:
Ofner (surgery for chronic heel condition), Ruusuvuori (extended break for mental/physical wellbeing), Fognini (foot injury).

Walkovers/retirements during AO:
Darderi (R pectoral), Shang (foot injury), Dimitrov (groin/adductor injury), Gaston (not sure, other than the curse of being drawn against Lehecka).

Players appearing to be suffering from injuries during matches at AO:
Mostly the Australians - Kyrgios (abdominal strain, ongoing injury R wrist), Popyrin (low back/gluteal), Kokkinakis (R shoulder), Thompson (foot/calf injury). ?Tommy Paul (not sure about L shoulder).

#14 ·
@USATP, in answer to your question, some people on here refer to Dimitrov as Diva.

More retirements during AO (since my last post)
Diaz Acosta (L ankle injury)
Fils (ankle injury, possibly aggravated by strapping)
Draper (effects of 3x5-setters + chronic tendinitis L hip)
Monfils (probably multiple issues related to time on court)
Djokovic (confirmed L hamstring tear).

Other players appearing to be ill or injured at AO:
Davidovich Fokina (R hip flexor injury picked up during match with Paul)
Sinner (possible question mark over health - short lived illness with dizziness in R16, cramping in SF).

Players withdrawing from other tournaments with injuries:
Cerundolo has withdrawn from DC (?Achilles injury)
Davidovich Fokina and Djokovic have also pulled out of DC, and Gaston and Monfils have pulled out of Montpelier (all following injuries sustained at AO).

@USATP, glad that all is good between us!
Some more players to add to your list. More questions than answers regarding some of the retirements at Montpelier.

Retirements from Montpelier
Halys (problem with L foot/toes, probably blisters).
Kukushkin (don't know the reason, some might question why he retired 0-5 in the decider)
Basiliashvili (don't know the reason, again a question mark about why he chose to retire down 2-5, 0-40).

Players withdrawing from Montpelier, Rotterdam and Dallas
Korda (not played since AO, withdrew from Montpelier and now from Rotterdam - concern that his elbow may not be fully healed?)
Gaston withdrew from Montpelier; Dimitrov, Draper and Thompson all withdrew from Rotterdam - none have played since sustaining/aggravating injuries at AO.

#18 ·
Retirements from Rotterdam
Auger-Aliassime (toe injury, after run to Montpelier title the previous week).
Lehecka (L hamstring injury).

Also, not injuries but lots of illness in Rotterdam (Alcaraz having a cold and wearing nasal strips, Mpetshi Perricard withdrawing with illness, Rune said to have been suffering with fever, de Minaur coughing during the final).

Retirements from Dallas
Nishioka (shoulder injury)

Other retirements
Pouille retired from the Lille Challenger final (total Achilles rupture, undergoing surgery).

Withdrawals (presumably due to ongoing injury problems)
Thompson, Shang and Monfils all withdrw from Marseille. Fils withdrew from Marseille and has also withdrawn from Doha.

#19 ·
Withdrawals/walkovers in Buenos Aires:
Passaro withdrew after coming through qualifying (illness).
Musetti walkover in QF (R calf injury)

Walkovers/retirements in Delray Beach:
Nishioka walkover in R2 (L shoulder injury again)
Mmoh retirement (possibly glute?)

Withdrawals/retirements in Marseille:
Perricard withdrew (illness)
Zhang retired in QF (possibly illness?)

#27 · (Edited)
Retirements/walkovers in Doha
Medjedovic walkover in R2 (R hamstring injury while doing splits against Tsitsipas in R1).
Medvedev retired from QF after losing the 1st set (said afterwards he had food poisoning).

Retirements in Rio
Hugo Dellien retired in R1 (?L hamstring).

Withdrawals
Nagal withdrew from Rio (possibly continuing back issue but not sure).
Thompson withdrew from Dubai and Passaro withdrew from Santiago (presumably continuing problems with foot injury and illness respectively).
Korda withdrew from Acapulco, after also withdrawing from Montpelier and Rotterdam (something's up, is it the elbow again or something else?)
Fritz withdrew from Acapulco (abdominal injury since the week before Dallas, has put the blame on the AO balls).
Hurkacz and Opelka also withdrew from Acapulco (no reason given).

#28 ·
Opelka also withdrew from Acapulco (no reason given).
Opelican's already practicing & posting from IW. Probably wanted to save his body & not waste his limited PR admits on a filler 500 event now that he's showing promising form since returning. Smartly saved it for IW.

Honestly, idk if Shelton should've played Aquípulco, but I know he has QF points to defend & his dad played there. At some point, though, I do anticipate him giving that event up if he ever envisions winning during the Sunshine swing.

Retirements/walkovers in Dubai and Acapulco
Dimitrov retired 0-6 down with ‘fatigue’ in R1 in Dubai (his 3rd retirement from 4 tournaments so far this year).
Walkovers from Ruud and Paul in R2 in Acapulco and a retirement from Rune 0-3 down in R2 in Acapulco (stomach bug going around).

Withdrawals from tournaments this week
Musetti was a late withdrawal from Acapulco (presumably still the calf injury).
Jarry withdrew from IW (suffered injury to L toe in Santiago).
Kokkinakis withdrew from IW (announced he has had recent surgery for a pectoral injury).
Nishioka and Opelka also withdrew from IW, and Medjedovic and Pouille withdrew from IW qualies. (No reason given by Opelka; presumably still the shoulder for Nishioka, hamstring injury for Medjedovic and Achilles for Pouille).

EDIT: Opelka is playing Indian Wells!

Diallo retired in R2 down 4-6, 3-2 (ankle injury).
Machac gave a walkover in R4 (illness).

Withdrawals from Houston, Bucharest and Marrakech
There’s been a flood of withdrawals from these tournaments. May not all be injury related but the ones that are include Monteiro (R leg injury), Faria (bone edema in his foot), Shang (still recovering from foot surgery).
Likely to be something up with Passaro (not played since Buenos Aires, not sure why).

Update on Michelsen: He played Miami, but revealed that he lost 15 lbs in weight after coming down with food poisoning in Acapulco and a suspected virus in IW.

Retirements in the trio of tournaments (Houston, Bucharest, Marrakech)

Martinez retired in QF of Marrakech down 1-6, 0-2 (not sure of reason).

Withdrawals
Marozsan withdrew from Bucharest (L ankle injury).
Rune and Fritz both pulled out of UTS in Rimes (knee injury and abdominal injury respectively) and then Fritz also withdrew from Monte Carlo.
Hurkacz is the other big name to withdraw from Monte Carlo (not played since IW, lower back trouble).

#48 ·
Retirements in Monte Carlo
Rune retired down 2-6, 0-3 against Borges in R1 (illness).

Withdrawals from Munich
Zhang (3rd withdrawal in a row, not played since IW, not sure what the problem is, possibly knee)
Hurkacz (also 3rd withdrawal in a row & not played since IW, back injury - recently said "I want to return to the court 100% confident, healthy, and fully ready. I'm getting there, and I'll be back soon…")
Fritz (ab injury)
Borges (L wrist injury)
Tabilo (L wrist injury)
Halys (R leg injury)

Withdrawals from Barcelona
Sonego (?)
Nishikori (upper back injury, turned down a MDWC)
Machac (gastro illness)
Musetti (R thigh injury, hampered him in the MC final)

Also a significant question mark over Dimitrov's fitness (0-6, 0-6 loss to de Minaur in MC QF, scheduled to play Madrid and Rome next)

Monfils and Lehecka were two more late withdrawals from Munich. Tournament ended up with 5 LLs in total!

Late withdrawals from Madrid
4 LLs into the bottom half of the draw after 4 late withdrawals from Thompson (multiple injuries this season, now seems to be low back), Carballes Baena (L hip), Nishioka (L shoulder), and Alcaraz (R adductor tear).

Retirements/walkovers this week in Madrid (8 of them!)
Moutet ret. 3-6, 2-4 down in R1. (Could have been mistaken for a rage quit but he said it was his back).
Goffin ret. after 1 game in the 3rd set in R1 (R ankle/Achilles, looked serious).
Van de Zandschulp ret. 1-4 down in the 3rd set in R1 (had off-court MTO, ?L thigh).
Djere walkover in R2 (L shoulder).
Monfils walkover in R2 (illness).
Rune ret. 2-6 down in R2 (R knee).

#51 ·
Retirements in the 2nd week of Madrid
Berrettini ret. after losing a 1st set TB in R3 (ab injury).

Withdrawals from Rome
5 players have withdrawn with injuries/illness:
Zhang (has been out since IW, not much info but may be L knee?)
Tabilo (L wrist – his ranking will drop as he was a semi-finalist in Rome last year)
Goffin (the injury in Madrid was a partial tear of the plantar fascia – he is likely to miss RG)
Monfils (viral illness)
Nishikori (R shoulder)

#52 ·

Withdrawals from Hamburg, Geneva and RG
Flurry of players withdrawing from Hamburg and Geneva (among others: Dimitrov, Tsitsipas, Korda, Mensik, Shapovalov, Griekspoor, Sonego, Medjedovic) - some of whom will simply want a rest week ahead of RG, some of whom may be nursing injuries .
Rune withdrew from Hamburg (citing a persistent infection), Humbert and Thompson both withdrew from Hamburg/Geneva respectively (likely still injured following retirements in Rome).
Zhang has withdrawn from RG.

1. Dang, Shang. Didn't realize it's been so long. I wonder if he'll look to return in earnest during the HCs, especially the Asian swing?
2. What is going on with MyHatch? So many retirements, it's giving AARP & Social Security. Wonder if he'll spill the tea later.
3. Yeah, I read the Reservoiri ATP article. Made me think about what Garcia said about her retirement from the sport.
