The 2017 final was even greater.

 

The first 4 sets was tennis of the highest level. The last set brought down the quality.

 

2017 was quite dope, especially when 40-15erer managed to serve the match out from 15-40.

 

Objectively I came home when it was early in the 5th, so I missed 80% of the match but I thought the level wasn't great compared to 2009 or 2012 (especially from Nadal who looked really tired out there).

 

It was one of the great finals. Their battle in 2017 was also good -- and Novak-Rafa in 2012 was also very good.

 

2017 was trash.

 

If you changed the word "Final" to "tournament" you would have a reasonable argument. Not that the final wasn't great, but the whole tournament deserves credit. 08 '10 and 12 and 17 were also very memorable.

 

2012 final was better for me, last man standing kinda stuff. A 6 hour war.

Seriously, the Australian Open tends to feature the best matches of the four GS tournaments as the players come out of hibernation fresh and motivated. There have been a number of better quality finals than the one the opener mentioned. One of the obvious ones is the 99 finals between Korda and Rios, which really stands out as one of the all time best GS finals.

 

Federer played like shit in all 7 of his AO finals. The first 3 he won against weak competition. The fourth against inexperienced unclutch Murray. The fifth against unclutch Nadal with one of the worst forehand performances I've ever seen. The sixth against mental mug Cilic with insane servebotting

 

That's surely a view with which any Federer fan would agree.

2009, 2012 and 2017 were the three most memorable AO finals at least in the past 20 years. Hard to chose one out of the three.

It's the same as USO13. Fedole choked the worst final of their careers to Dull. Same as Verdasco.

The match would've been great if Fed didn't choke, but after that it just wasn't a high-quality match. Overrated by Wankael fans for obvious reasons as Wankael NEVER wins off clay without luck, cheating, injuries, flukes, fatigue, scheduling, or having a donkey take out Fedole.
