Re: What's the capital of Canada? Watch Harvard students struggle to answer. Emarrass

I don't know the number off the top of my head, but I'll just list them all and then count :)

Yukon, Northwest, Nunavut, B.C., Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Newfoundland/Labrador, Prince Ed Island, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick.

Which makes the total: 13

I'm in an AP geography class which helps ;)
pretty good Freaky :worship:.

now, this is hilarious, a must see. Leno is great.
Leno: What is the biggest country in South America? ... answer: 'Africa '
Leno: What do you call people who live in Denmark? ...answer: 'um, Jewish '
just watch it, it's good.

Why are you raging so hard?

In terms of cities that most people talk about when referring to Canada, Ottawa is way low down on the list. People always talk about Toronto, Montreal and even Vancouver are more discussed and popular places.

It's exactly the same with Australia and their capital city of Canberra.
The sad thing is that Canada/USA are neighbors and intricately connected in many ways, and harvard is in the north east close to the border.

No excuses for their (the ones who don't know) ignorance.

honestly it's not like Ottowa is on the news that often or that noteworthy, I'm not that surprised... sort of overshadowed by Montreal and Quebec

Having built my first ever visual application as a game in which the user had to answer to questions about the capitals of all countries on Earth, I am speechless by this ordeal.

Most Canadians don't know much about the States either but after spending a couple years down there I've definitely had some bizarre interactions with a select few Americans who seem to think Canada is as foreign as the moon.

"Do you guys have daylight savings time or is that not a Canadian thing?"
"You have a queen? How does that work, are you not an independent country?"

Good times. :)

Re: What's the capital of Canada? Watch Harvard students struggle to answer. Emarrass

A vast majority of Americans couldn't tell the difference between Sweden and Switzerland. Which is fine. Most Europeans would struggle to name 5 American states.

Generally speaking, at least judging from posts by the ones I'm friends with on Facebook, Harvard students are people who talk about the world and act as if they feel qualified to talk about it, and perhaps eventually to change it in a meaningful way. So yeah, it would have been helpful to know a few facts about what's what in the world, if they're going to feel that way. I don't think this is a "most Americans" thing.

Trust me, it's not just Canada.

"Do Catholics believe in God?"--an American I know

I remember seeing a Hungarian guy on Facebook go crazy than an American from Nevada didnt know what the capital of Hungary was. I asked him what the capital of Nevada was and of course he had a million excuses and no idea.
That's a good point actually. USA is so big and a lot of us Europeans are just happy to know the capital and that's it.

I actually have no idea what the capital of Nevada is . I know that Vegas is in Nevada, but it would be tough to imagine Vegas being a capital of anything other than partying :p.

That's not my impression. Sure, not many will get all the way to 50, but there are more than five quite famous ones.

Was a figure of speech, they could name more, but would struggle to put them on a map. And on the other hand surely most Americans could also name more than 5 European countries.

How would you believe this anyway? Is it not logical that Europeans know at least 5 American states, when most Americans DO know 5 European states?

It's just as easy to say California, Texas, Florida, Alaska and Arizona, as is to say France, UK, Belgium, Germany and Spain.

Might have to do with the fact that most American states are a big fat squarish blot. The center states are very hard to pinpoint by some Americans, let alone Europeans.:p

I think Europeans on average knows more about the American map than vice versa. Both sides could surely benefit from knowing even more, though.

If you're tired of the monotony, try looking at a US map where congressional districts are drawn in :superlol:

Oh, I am not. I know the map and I know the capitals of each state, which is kinda rare for a non-American. Was just speaking of most other people, like my wife for instance who can't tell Indiana from Illinois, and has heard of both of them from Monopoly.

Good man :yeah: I too learnt the world map at an early age, I'd be extremely disappointed if in a quiz I missed one of the 50 states or placed one wrong on the map. But I guess this is not very common.
