...given the circumstances, match level, opponent, stage, etc, all things combined?
I think it's either the FO 2011 semifinal against Djokovic, the Wimbledon 2012 semifinal against Djokovic, or the AO 2017 final vs Goatdal
FO 2011 SF: his weakest surface, tough year, opponent on the historical streak, high-level match
W 2012 SF: KO match for the number one spot, back problems during the tournament, more than 2 years without winning Slams
AO 2017 F finally won a Slam, beating his kryptonite in the final after a long break. However, it has to be said that Nadal back then wasn't close to King from 2011-12

Other contenders:
  • Wimbledon 2001 vs Sampras: Youngerer & Chokerer against the King of Wimbledon. Not the best year of Petros, but he was still the defending champion and 1st seed. The modern equivalent would be Sinner defeating King at AO2024.
  • Hamburg 2007 F vs Nadal: ended Goatdal's streak on clay, first time beat Rafa on the surface, served a bagel in the decider
  • Wimbledon 2007 vs Nadal: defended his territory from good Nadal, although Rafa was still pretty young
  • US Open 2008 SF vs King: defeated a good King, avenged his AO loss, proved he still has it.
  • FO 2009 SF vs Del Potro: defeated peaking opponent on the way to win 1st RG, won the match despite being outplayed
  • 2010 WTF F vs Nadal: defended WTF from Indoors mug who had the best year of his career
  • Cincinnati 2012 SF vs King: obliterated peak King, served a bagel to him
  • Shanghai 2014 SF vs King: dominated peak King in two sets
  • Wimbledon 2015 SF vs Mugray: straight set win against peak Mugray
  • Shanghai 2017 F vs Nadal: completing 4-0 season sweep, winning all 6 sets in their MS matches
  • Wimbledon 2019 SF vs Nadal: another win against good Nadal in style
  • WTF 2019 RR vs King: straight setting King at 38 years, eliminating him from WTF, and ending King's hopes for YE#1

It's like saying that the most impressive win of Djokovic's career is 6-2 6-2 6-1 vs Ferrer or one of the beatdowns he gave to Medvedev. Or that the most impressive win of Nadal's career is beating Ruud
Pushwitt is a weak-era clown.
Yesterday:

Amazing Ruud is unlucky to face GOATs in his Slam finals
Not everyone has the luxury to face Philipussyses and Puertos in their first Slams finals :dunno:
Keep 'em coming, OP. (y)

I think the most interesting thing about Federer is that most of his wins were one sided blowouts, so he didn’t easily get a chance to have “epic wins”. Where he is conquering a long climb up a mountain. I’d say AO2017 is the one that qualifies given his age/rival/time off.

But the most epic Fed matches during his peak most remember are the losses.

2006 Rome vs Nadal
2005 Masters vs Nalby
2005 AO vs Safin (IMO the greatest match of All time)

Indeed, when Federer was peaking in the mid-to-late 2000s, opponents were usually just hanging on or simply outplayed. The "go to" matches that are remembered as truly epic, like Wimbledon 2008 against Nadal, were often losses. One epic win that tends to get overlooked is the 2009 Wimbledon final against a peaking Roddick (also by OP in his poll), when Federer broke the Slam record in a 16–14 fifth set. Maybe that one feels less “epic” in memory because, even with the score line, there was always a sense of inevitability that Federer would find a way to win.

I also wouldn’t call Federer–Safin at the 2005 AO the greatest match of all time. Even at that tournament I think we’ve seen even higher-quality contests, like Djokovic–Nadal in 2012, the incredible Djokovic–Wawrinka battles (especially in 2013), or Federer’s own five-set final against Nadal in 2017. Still, watching Safin that night was jaw-dropping. His level was outrageous, and even then it was only just enough to edge Federer.

Biased but I'll throw a vote for 2007 AO SF v Roddick.

4 all first set, and then Roger kicked into a gear very few have ever found for the next 11 games or so. Untouchable.

Yes he wasn't facing an all time great, but many pundits felt Roddick had been closing the gap, coming within a point of beating Roger at TMC end of 06, and beating him at Kooyong in the lead up. At least among the press there seemed to be this view that we were in for an epic tussle, and one where Roddick was a real chance. In reality the gap had never been wider.
