Players injured for a minimum of six months can ask for a protected ranking, which is based on their average ranking during the first three months of their injury.
The player can use their protected ranking to enter tournaments' main draws or qualifying competitions when coming back from injury (or some occurrences such as Covid-19 frozen ranking concerns in 2020–21). It is not used for seeding purposes.
It is also used in the WTA for players returning from pregnancy leave.

The confusion continues in Vienna. 1 ALT already placed, so why not #2 and #3? Maybe the ALTs are given limited time to confirm that they want to take the place? For instance, Nagal is the next-in in Vienna, but already accepted the ALT into Basel.
