Masters summary

Lucky guy

Guillermo Canas found out late Friday he had won the right, by default, to come to Houston and hope one of the Masters Cup qualifiers has something terrible happen to him.

With the top two alternates, Andre Agassi and David Nalbandian, begging off because of injuries, Canas got the invite, which guarantees him $50,000 for the week even if he never picks up a racket in competition.

It's a nice reward for the 26-year-old from Buenos Aires, Argentina, who is neck and neck with U.S. Clay Courts champion Tommy Haas for ATP comeback player of the year honors.

Canas missed almost eight months in 2003 with a hand injury and had fallen to No. 274 in the rankings when the year began. But he rebounded with his best year, winning three tournaments and reaching four finals to climb back to No. 11.

Canas becomes the fifth Argentine on the premises, joining singles qualifiers Guillermo Coria and Gaston Gaudio and the doubles team of Gaston Etlis and Martin Rodriguez.

Said Roger Federer: "It just shows how strong tennis is in Argentina right now. They have basically three or four Davis Cup teams."

He'll be missed
Westside Tennis Club owners Jim and Linda McIngvale wanted their friend Andre Agassi to be part of the event, but it wasn't in the cards after Agassi pulled up lame again after reaching the semifinals in Madrid and the final in Stockholm.

But the McIngvales weren't upset with Agassi's decision to pull out of the Paris tournament, thereby ending any chance he might have had to qualify for the Masters Cup.

"Andre went back over there (to Europe) and gave it his best shot," McIngvale said. "That impressed me.

"He's said many times that he listens to his body, that's how he has been able to play for as long as he has. We'd love to have had him, but it just wasn't meant to be."

A strained hip early in the summer forced Agassi to pull out of Wimbledon and he apparently aggravated the injury in Stockholm. Agassi wound up not playing in Houston this year after winning the Clay Courts and reaching the Masters Cup final in 2003.

Trim Roddick
Andy Roddick returned to Houston with noticeably shorter hair, but he fears he might have made a strategic mistake getting shorn so dramatically.

"If I'd known it was going to be this cold," he said Saturday, "I wouldn't have done it."

Roddick joked the new 'do would make him lighter and, hence, more effective — especially if he runs across Roger Federer in the semis or final. But, all kidding aside, Roddick is plenty fit. He has been training hard since the U.S. Open to prepare himself for the grueling Davis Cup final on clay in Spain in early December.

"I'm in about as good a shape as I've been, and as healthy as I've been, all year," he said. "The Davis Cup process started for me as soon as the U.S. Open was over.

"It's no secret that's not our favorite surface."
