Do enlighten us on the reason. It can't be the career achievements because Andy is far up there in that department.

Being serious though: Gaudio, Johansson and Korda come to mind.

 

Stop ragging on Gaudio. His backhand was sublime and he was hindered by mental health issues.

 

It doesn't change the fact that he was a worse player than Coria and one of the most pedestrian GS winners of all time. He had a great tournament, granted. Otherwise he wouldn't have won. But let's be honest, he sticks out like a sore thumb when you go over GS winners' lists.

Yannick Noah doesn't belong on this poll though. I can think of at least ten Slam winners who were worse than him.

Anyway, it seems obvious that his career was better than Gastón's. And he beat Ríos in straights!

 

In terms of career Gaudio I guess, but in terms of talent he had the game to win Roland Garros. He should have had a much better career than he did outside that tournament, a pity he was a total headcase.

Korda is probably worse.

Gaudio was just awful in that final. He was getting crushed by Coria for the first 2 sets before the far better player started cramping. Even then Gaudio let his barely mobile opponent back in and got incredibly lucky in the 5th. Coria threw the match away, the result was a travesty.

Plus he did absolutely nothing the rest of his career.

 

Coria began cramping in the fourth set. Gaudio had already calmed his ridiculous nerves by then. Gaudio played an excellent tournament. You make it as though Coria was continuously cramping from the 4th set onwards, which is not the case.

And Edmondson won the 1976 Australian Open, not 1996.

 

None of the players listed in the poll ever won a Grand Slam.

Yeah... Coria "cramped" in the 2004 RG Final. A tactic used by Coria whenever he deemed it convenient. He lost fair and Gaudio deserved the win

That Gaudio-Coria final upsets me every time I think of it.

 

Normally I'd pick Johansson, but he played that final against Safin very well, he simply outplayed him (although Safin wasn't perfect).
But Gaudio lost to coria only because of Coria's lapse. Coria was terribly awful from 4-4 in 3rd set and despite that he had MP in the fifth. Gaudio almost lost to choking cramping Coria...

Gaudio, great one tournament, but his other results were quite "poor".

 

The correct answer is one of the AO winners in the 70s who took advantage of the fact Borg, McEnroe and Connors weren't showing up. Of course, it was a MM back then, but due to the AO's equal status now, they are now among some great names.
