From outside top 200 at the start to this. Good for him, points and financially wise. Into top 40.
A life-transforming tournament for Vacherot. Very happy for him, he was outstanding in that final set. He has had a great run of coming back from a set down in this tournament (twice in qualies and then 4 times in the main draw). Will break into the top 40. Career prize money until this tournament was only $594,077. Has been offered a WC into Paris (he was down to play a Challenger in Seoul that week).

This was all written in the stars.
Guy has achieved what Gasquet, Monfils and De Minaur have not been able to.
Powerful.
I guess Vacherot doesn't represent France so he doesn't have that burden, I guess.

Nice story; both will remember these two weeks for the rest of their lives as the best moments of their professional careers.
Also, both will never achieve anything remotely close to what they achieved here. They are solid top-100 players at best in this tough era.

Many times setbacks are often good instead. For Vachelot, the serious injury he suffered at the beginning of the year left him out for six months and many thought it would be difficult for him to have another chance at the world's top 100. Instead, he built up enough fitness for his trip to Shanghai, and in 36°C and 80% humidity, he pulled off an upset that will go down in tennis history. As fate sometimes has it, the best moments in life come when the right place(slow surface and fast ball), the right time(really hot and humid weather), and the right form are all fulfilled at the same time!

That's because the only player you know is Andy Murray. No idea why you bother to post on a tennis forum.
although he says this about nearly every player not named Andy Murray, even players firmly planted in the top 30, in his defense, I had never heard of this guy either before this tournament . It's truly a remarkable result for a player ranked outside the top 200 to come out of the blue and win the whole thing.

He has played Monte Carlo for the past few years and usually plays on one the main courts there so even if you never watch Challengers, people have had the chance to see him play before.

Q1 Basavareddy
Q2 Draxl
R128 Djere
R64 Bublik
R32 Machac
R16 Griekspoor
QF Rune
SF Djokovic
F Rinderknech

Truly impressive. 😶

As an alternate, he benefited from Fonseca's withdrawal... which benefited Nardi... and Vacherot was able to make the Q.

Then he plays the qualifiers to make it to the final draw.

Probably the first Q to win a MS, and I wonder if he's the first non-seed to win a 96-player MS... before recent years, only IW and Miami had this format....

Lol, I've never experienced anything more bizarre and suspicious. Let him pee!
The suspicion should be match-fixing, not doping. (outcome by a "family decision")

So happy for him.

Are you watching Fokina?... this is what can happen if you get by a big name & hold it together.

Hang in there & take your chance like your life depends on it & this guy did.

Moves to 40th in the rankings now

Federer was in the crowd watching the final after playing a doubles exhibition the other day with the guy that killed John Wick.

Rinderknech is trying to say something to Vacherot in the prize ceremony and he just burst into tears, barely able to say anything. So beautiful!

Valentin Vacherot is the lowest ranked player to win a masters title. He was ranked #204!

What a story and final between the 2 cousins.

The 3rd set was incredible quality and Vacherot was playing top 5 level in that 5th set.

Vacherot was hitting so well and how did he managed to find this level after playing so many matches including 2 qualifiers matches and some long matches as well like vs Rune and Griekspoor. This set of conditions was something even top players were struggling and cramping but he was out there peaking and hitting it so hard off both wings and serving so well and being unfazed.

Genuinely insane stuff.

Congrats Vacherot on an insane week! Props! Well done.

Congeats to Arthur Rinderknech on a great week as well. Beating Zverev and Medvedev is impressive nonetheless!
