This run is the highlight of the season for me. Beautiful.

Let's not forget that he only arrived in Shanghai as an ALT. He was lucky to get into the qualifying draw and was almost knocked out there by Draxl. This was his run:

Q1 Basavareddy
Q2 Draxl
R128 Djere
R64 Bublik
R32 Machac
R16 Griekspoor
QF Rune
SF Djokovic
F Rinderknech

Rinderknech was dominant on serve for 1.5 sets, but then struggled on pretty much every service game after that. Vacherot had an insane number of BPs in the final set and "only" converted two. The Monegasque was completely on fire in that final set.

He'll be ranked #40.

A life-transforming tournament for Vacherot. Very happy for him, he was outstanding in that final set. He has had a great run of coming back from a set down in this tournament (twice in qualies and then 4 times in the main draw). Will break into the top 40. Career prize money until this tournament was only $594,077. Has been offered a WC into Paris (he was down to play a Challenger in Seoul that week).

Wowee. Congrats to Vacherot. Started slow but really got into gear. Rinderknech did well to hold off Vacherot from completely running away with the match in the third set but Vacherot wouldn't be denied in the end. Miracle run from qualies to Masters 1000 champ.

Leicester were 5,000/1 at the start of the season, meaning if you put £1 you'd get £5,000 back.

If you put £1 on Vacherot at the start of the qualifiers and bet your winnings on him in the next round every time this is what you'd get

Pre tournament odds would probably have been a lot higher, because as he progressed thought the tournament the bookmakers' view of his ability would improve.

Many times setbacks are often good instead. For Vachelot, the serious injury he suffered at the beginning of the year left him out for six months and many thought it would be difficult for him to have another chance at the world's top 100. Instead, he built up enough fitness for his trip to Shanghai, and in 36°C and 80% humidity, he pulled off an upset that will go down in tennis history. As fate sometimes has it, the best moments in life come when the right place(slow surface and fast ball), the right time(really hot and humid weather), and the right form are all fulfilled at the same time!

Truly impressive. 😶

As an alternate, he benefited from Fonseca's withdrawal... which benefited Nardi... and Vacherot was able to make the Q.

Then he plays the qualifiers to make it to the final draw.

Probably the first Q to win a MS, and I wonder if he's the first non-seed to win a 96-player MS... before recent years, only IW and Miami had this format....

Albert Portas won Hamburg 2001 as a qualifier. He beat Ferrero in the final, in what turned out be the only title of his career.
Carretero won Hamburg 1996 as a qualifier, but back then it was still referred to as a Super 9. As to the surprise factor, this win is right up there with Carretero. Although Carretero was ranked # 143.
