Makes sense , its fun to play team tennis. Laver Cup is basically Davis Cup but high end. You can let down your team , but that is not as depressing as letting down yourself. Also on the flip side, winning for your team is often better than winning for yourself.

You lose against Mannarino in round one of the US Open, terrible. You and Taylor Fritz or Luca Dadari win a high octane doubles match? Peak experience.

How about the Six Kings Slam, Holgie?
More money, much less fun. I personally don't like Laver Cup. But for players who are always on their own the whole season, a relaxed team environment where you play tennis and earn money without much pressure, like in tour tournaments or other team competitions like Davis cup, can be a breath of fresh air. These young players also get to ang with the likes of Federer, Borg, ... etc.

The quote from Rune (haven't read the whole article) does not say it is the most important or the most sought after, but the most fun, which I imagine can be true for some players. No shame in that.

I do agree Laver Cup seems to have interesting team relationships that the tour or Davis Cup doesn't typically have which I guess is unique although it's usually Team World (mostly due to the Americans) that have a seemingly more frat vibe there IMO.

Season is already over. And pretty much over until the QF/SF/F start at the Australian at this point. This generation hasn't proven themselves they even belong outside of Sinner/Carlos. Maybe if they actually start doing something when it matters most, people will gain more interest in these events. Until then, no tennis until Australian Quarters at least to see who maybe stepped up outside of Carlos/Alcaraz/326 year old Djokovic

Greederer's propaganda is off the charts. Tennis truly will never see a PR merchant like him again.
The man is an absolute business juggernaut.

He saw Djokovic take his tennis GOAT crown and now he's decided to become the GOAT businessman. A bit Ronaldo who's aiming for some stupid numbers on his socials after Messi destroyed him.

I actually see Federer being the ATP Chairman a decade from now, or at least on the Board along with 5 or 6 Saudis.

Lmao. His aura is something else. Check my recent thread for more appreciation on this topic.
He knows he had the most impact. He transcended winning. The art and aura are eternal.

So if this is his favorite event, think he could win something last night?

It makes sense. Tennis is such an individual sport, it's rare for players to get a chance to play in a team environment, even rarer to play as a team with people from other countries. Imagine if we could see an Alcaraz/Sinner doubles some year? Golfers take Ryder Cup very seriously, it's a prestigious event and they all want to be a part of it. Haters can hate all they want but Laver Cup plays to sell out crowds every year including this year in San Francisco. All 5 sessions sold out in the 17,000 seat arena per the Athletic, with prime seats reselling up to $1,000 or more. If you average out the tickets to $350 each just the ticket receipts is close to $30m, plus sponsorships (all those corporate signs inside the arena), TV rights, this is a profitable venture.

Players like the team atmosphere but I'm sure they also love the paycheck. Each player gets an appearance fee based on ranking and popularity. The winning team member each gets $250K. Losing team members only get appearance fee. Wouldn't surprise me if Alcaraz gets $1M in appearance fee. But many players also get appearance fee in ATP events especially the 500s and 250s.

So far I've seen the Alcaraz/Mensik doubles, Rune-Cerundulo, Alcaraz-Frits and the Rune/Ruud doubles, they are all high quality and very entertaining. I'm planning to watch all 4 matches today.
