Ranked world number 5 in 2004.

Career W/L record: 327-337.

Anyone was a fan?

Very well remember him. One of those names who did not have the game to threaten the big names in the game. The short guy from Germany and the Diego Schwartzman of the era prior to the Big 3 era. A little lesser player than Sebastien Grosjean who more or less belonged to the same time.

Rainer was interesting because he seemed to spend a long portion of his career at the challenger level after his career peak. Other than a mini-resurgence in 2008 he spent 7-8 years stuck at the 80-180 ranking range which is odd for a former slam finalist. You can't really blame injuries either.

Yeah of course I remember him, as the one who stole Japan Open title.

I always liked him.

His reputation suffers a tad from the manner of his AO run. He had good fortune in getting a walkover from third seed Safin then vultured Nalbandian & Roddick who were coming off exhausting night epic highs (arguably the most impressive wins of their career to date) and still a tad unproven as regular contenders. Nalbandian clearly didn't care enough on the day, and Roddick was likely wrecked and written off in advance. Like Clement (who relied on an epic choke in the SF), he had reasonable form and backed himself against AOKingssi but was no match on the day. It's possible Rainer still makes that final anyway, he was playing well, but he had a lot of luck along the way. 31yo Wayne Ferreira making a SF in 2003 also felt embarrassing at the time.

Moya's slam record after 1998 was really underwhelming in hindsight. He really should've been stringing more victories together and making more hard second weeks than he did.

I forgot how poor Moya's GS record was after 1998 RG. 1 SF and 5 somewhat sporadic QFs.

At least he was able to beat the absolute favourite for the 1998 RG Marcelo Rios on his way to victory.

The answer is simple: the forum rules prohibit talking about German tennis players older than Tommy Hass (unless they are in prison).

Rainer Schuettler?

A player I remember back in the late 1990s.

To be honest, a player I would like to forget, and have forgotten about until you mentioned him!

Along with Arnaud Clement, not a fan of these type of players. Then came along Giles Simon who I saw down in Eastbourne.

And, sorry to say it as he has fans, but I can't stand Cameron Norrie's game either. But he is a hard worker, and now Top 10
