Rivals become teammates & even coaches to one another. If you're interested in what the pros really think of the sport in real time, Laver Cup is the perfect format.

2025: San Francisco, CA

New Team World Captain: Andre Agassi
New Team Europe Captain: Yannick Noah.

TC has ad-free match & behind the scenes streams.

Early notes: Noah is more verbal than Borg. Agassi has had great insight & energy. Cahill is watching & reported that Ruud reduced racket head size down to 98. He also confirmed slight changes to weight & balance. JMac noted Opelka has to hit his spots on serve more consistently if he wants to improve his ranking back towards Top 20. Team World has yet to win a match in the USA. 0-7 is insane.

Early pet peeve: Alcaraz resting his feet/shoes up on the back of the couches where others would need to put their head. If you're going to lounge on the couch, keep your feet down on the seat or ground.

Mickey's not clutch & he should've played college tennis for a year or two. But why be a broke student when you can be rich & mediocre? He opted for being a competitor instead of becoming a winner. His poor record in finals is proof of that. He compromised the development of a higher ceiling for fast money. Now he's on tour with limited weapons, poor mental toughness, & opponents who see him as a free meal. He was even referred to during the match as "the forgotten American".

Most of the Americans inside the Top 100 are outside the Top 50. The USTA is raking in the money, so they don't care. No Slam, no Davis Cup, no WN1... no problem!

Team Europe will win, but aside from Chuck, the most exciting part for me so far at the 2025 Laver Cup was seeing Rogie in the stands and Rogie in the back room with team Europe as they're eating food and he's interacting with them!! Seeing Rogie around is more exciting than virtually the whole ATP currently playing (aside from Chuck, Sin City, and Djokovic losing to Chuck and Sin City in GS SFs or retiring with injuries in SFs to Zverev, etc.)...

More Day 1 Notes

Everyone is in the house: Bill Gates, Federer, Steve Kerr (Warriors).

Agassi is endlessly quotable.
"Stick a knife in him!" "He's calling for the physio... I'm joking." "I like the forehand that almost hit me." "That's the -ish I'm talkin' about!" "We can be a little loco..." "It takes 11 mins to win this match!" "Dude, can I sit over here? Wtf..." "God, I wish I knew something about doubles!"

Noah is much more vocal & Europe is more energetic as a result compared to '23 & '24. He has good, specific feedback, but Henman is interjecting with banal, platitudes a bit too much. It reads as hollow & camera hungry. Talked over Noah which I wasn't a fan of. Slams speak first. Pat Rafter, who could've been a Captain, is playing his role as VC much better in deferring to Agassi.

"Fonseca turned our whole team morale around... he's really impressive, mentally." -Opelka

Loved Cerundolo & Fonseca talking rapidly in Spanish while the white guys stood around them in silence.
You could tell Fonseca, more so than Mickey, is the reason why Agassi signed on for the role: to work with young, promising talent with weapons who are mentally tough, have high ceilings, are receptive to feedback, & love the crowd. J'oww did what AM couldn't.

Mickey is more comfortable in dubz. He gets more overwhelmed by the pressure of singles & shrinks under the stress. In dubz, he can focus on one part of the court.

Fergus Murphy forgot the scoring format for dubz, lol. Alcaraz is dominating dubz.

Laver Cup is perfect for getting trade secrets directly from the horse's mouth in real time. Bench Cam are awesome. The collaborative convos are so insightful.

You get to know which players become head cases under pressure & where their thinking goes in those moments. Cobolli complained about feeling rushed on a court that plays slower than some clay courts. He admitted to getting down, losing focus, & not wanting to lose in front of Roger. Each of the players who lost in singles vocalized thinking about things that don't matter. Agassi had to tell Opelka & Mickey, look, you're focusing on the wrong stuff. Scoreline doesn't matter. Look to create pressure & mix it up. Focus on the next point.

Also, love the potty mouths. Everyone is cursing, lol.

Day 1 Summary
Day Session: In the first two matches of this year's Laver Cup edition, Ruud defeated Opelka in tight straight sets 6-4 7-6(5) and Mensik defeated Michelsen in dramatic three-setter 6-1 6-7(3) 10/8. Team Europe led 2-0.

Night Session: The only win for Team World was delivered by Fonseca with a straight sets win over Cobolli 6-4 6-3. It was a debut like a heaven for the Brazilian. However, Team Europe had the last word in doubles match with Alcaraz/Mensik defeating Fritz/Michelsen 7-6(7) 6-4.

Score after Day 1 is 3-1 for Team Europe. Day 2 schedule hasn't been released yet.

I must say, watching Carlitos play doubles these days is a real treat. He's playing so freely that you can tell he's truly enjoying himself out there.

By the way, I'm really digging his platinum hair. He seems to slowly be transitioning into who he wants to be as he becomes a more mature young adult.. total honesty in style and deed.. no false pretenses.. just a young man having fun and trying to make everyone proud. Excellent role model this kid, especially as #1.

They clearly want to persist with this event - that;s their choice and who am I to complain if that's what the people want. But one thing must change for it to be taken seriously, there must be a criteria to select the players. If Sinner and Djokovic as the 2nd and 3rd best players in the world have no interest here then things are not right.

I honestly wonder, Does Federer need to bar one of the big 3 to not make it unfair? If Sinner and Alcaraz were on the same team then it would be an incredible sweep

Have Sinner and Alcaraz on a doubles team would probably break TV ratings

Imagine having 85% of your first serves in but still losing in straight sets. Straight up embarrassing. That was Atprev today.

Sascha was so bad. Absolutly shocking

I just realised that Rod Laver was wearing the red pocket square on his blazer just like the Team World players 😍 so cute 🥰

Rod Laver is Team World…

Zverev said in his press conference how his loss against ADM was mostly about him :oh: ...not that I actually disagree but it's funny he's not shy about his IMO narcissist personality in the press conferences hehe.
