Is the Fritz Djokovic h2h the worst h2h when you consider the age gap?

Every ATGs have had their fair share of players who could never beat them. Federer had Ferrer and Youzhny who he never lost to in 17 meetings. Nadal had Gasquet who he never lost in 18 meetings. Djokovic has Monfils who he has beaten in all 20 meetings. Lendl had Mayotte, and Borg had Gerulaitis who they both beat 17 times. The common trend here is that these players are from the exact same generation as the player they struggled against. Ferrer and Youzhny are about a year younger than Federer. Gasquet is two weeks younger than Nadal. Monfils is about year older than Djokovic. Lendl and Mayotte are the same age, and Gerulaitis was born two years before Borg. That means that they were young and old at the same. While Djokovic Monfils is the most lopsided h2h in men’s tennis, Monfils had 3 match points in Dubai 2020 against a healthy Djokovic. He also gave him a tough fight in Toronto masters 2014. It’s not a good h2h, but he played prime Djokovic several times. Fritz, OTOH, is about a decade younger than Djokovic and has never come close to beating him in 11 meetings. There were meetings where Djokovic was blatantly struggling or injured, yet Fritz couldn’t beat him, such as the recent USO meeting. Given this context, I think this h2h and matchup is worse than Monfils Djokovic. Discuss

Usually players don't lose to their poor man's versions ( and maybe in this case that's putting it lightly) There´s nothing in Fritz's game, even some unpredictability or randomness, that could trouble the old man. Everything Fritz does Djokovic does better x 10, and considering that if it wasn't for Sinneraz he would still be winning slams left and right it's only to be expected.

H2h doesnt work like that.Novak lost to alot of mugs in meaningless tournaments since coming back from surgery in 2018.
Taylor is unlucky to play all of their matches that were important to Novak.
The other thing is because of their high rankings ,they play QF or SF in big tournaments, where historically Novak played seriously.
Mugs know you can beat Grandpa in first or second rounds of some meaningless tournaments, because Novak is not giving all.

You think he would of been able to beat him at least once especially this old, inactive version. Anyway one of the poster is correct, worse players than Fritz have beaten Novak. What does that say? You can't use H2H to rank players.

But if Novak hang on long enough I'm sure Fritz will beat him at some point.

Honestly the should have at least beaten him once.

The USO match was winnable but he bottled it in every big point and some of other matches, I’m not sure. I mean look worse players have defeated Djokovic before especially on his bad days, Djokovic had some of those bad days with Fritz and Fritz still couldn’t win. I still remember AO 2021 where Djokovic looked so physically hampered.

For his ability, I’d say his H2H is embarrassing and the guy has defeated Alcaraz just a week ago playing lights out of tennis, it’s strange he couldn’t do this with Djokovic who is much older.

If this was prime Djokovic I’d not bat an eye but this older Djokovic, I’m not sure, he should have done better

"Tank" in supposed "small" tournaments by a top player is only in the mind of insecure fans, no top professional player stoops to this kind of "alchemy" for obvious reasons...
and even less ATGs

their reputation and legacy is at stake everywhere.

For various reasons, the ATP 250 and 500 are not always the easiest tournaments to win for top players, or even ATGs.

These tournaments are interspersed in what are considered more important moments, like the MSs (I'm not talking about the GSs ofc), which implies that these top players are not at their maximum focus..Which doesn't mean that they "tank" (I hate that expression), because a defeat can also have negative effects on confidence... and conversely boost the hope for other players of beating them too.

So, for the other players (2nd zone with all respect), their motivation and involvement is the same, and the prestige of a victory over a top players remains the same. :dunno:

Note that even for ATGs, the most surprising defeats are in 250-500s, more rarely in MSs.

ofc, it also depends on the ATGs and the 250-500 played, because everyone has their personal program, while, in principle, they are all present in the MSs.

It's still too early to have a large enough sample for Sinner and Alcaraz, but for the big3, that says something, even if I repeat, the numbers don't tell everything, and each ATG has his individual program.
