Every ATGs have had their fair share of players who could never beat them. Federer had Ferrer and Youzhny who he never lost to in 17 meetings. Nadal had Gasquet who he never lost in 18 meetings. Djokovic has Monfils who he has beaten in all 20 meetings. Lendl had Mayotte, and Borg had Gerulaitis who they both beat 17 times. The common trend here is that these players are from the exact same generation as the player they struggled against. Ferrer and Youzhny are about a year younger than Federer. Gasquet is two weeks younger than Nadal. Monfils is about year older than Djokovic. Lendl and Mayotte are the same age, and Gerulaitis was born two years before Borg. That means that they were young and old at the same. While Djokovic Monfils is the most lopsided h2h in men’s tennis, Monfils had 3 match points in Dubai 2020 against a healthy Djokovic. He also gave him a tough fight in Toronto masters 2014. It’s not a good h2h, but he played prime Djokovic several times. Fritz, OTOH, is about a decade younger than Djokovic and has never come close to beating him in 11 meetings. There were meetings where Djokovic was blatantly struggling or injured, yet Fritz couldn’t beat him, such as the recent USO meeting. Given this context, I think this h2h and matchup is worse than Monfils Djokovic. Discuss
