How Bad is Ivan Ljubicic?

Is this man the worst ever No.4 in Men’s Tennis? I believe he is, because I don’t ever see him winning a Grand Slam and he is just so extremely average. He is 27 years old, and has only ever reached the second week of a Slam on two occasions in his career. His backhand isn’t bad, his serve can occasionally be alright, but make no mistake; he is pathetic and will never achieve anything substantial in his career. It’s a disgrace that this man is effectively the 4th best player on the tour due to the rankings, when there countless players that are superior.

Thanks for bringing some diversity to the board.

It basically says there will never be another generation like this.

Davydenko is another conundrum in the Top Ten. An unbelievable player, but no Grand Slam yet. Still he seems immovable in his spot right now.
Daveydenko is another one of these good players, but not quite up to the standard of winning a GS. He doesn’t have any real strengths other than his ability to return everything.

Uh... there's only four majors in a year. There are a lot of people in the top ten that never hold up one of those trophies. The #8 guy ain't going to be winning a whole lot of Grand Slam events.

On Ljubicic, he strikes me as this year's Jiri Novak. Unassuming, steady, sneaks up on you and is playing at the TMC at the end of the year. I don't see him as a long-term presence in the Top 5.

This will sound dumb, but... why should winning a Grand Slam be the be all and end all?
It would be nice, but I'd prefer to be consistent and improve my game, picking up titles where I can. Then again, I don't play tennis because I loathe it and am so poor at it. But, it doesn't make me any less qualified than the other mtf experts

I am neutral on Ljubicic. I can think of other crap #4s. Unless doubles slams count, how bad was Jonas Bjorkman! Oh man!!!

In hindsight... yes I think you're right. For me personally, if I could get that stupid ball into that microscopic square (judging by my talent, it IS that small) when I serve.

Yeah, I think Thomas Johansson is pretty chuffed to have a slam under his belt :yeah:

I think Ljubicic is a great player. You don't become number 4 out of the blue. He has won a lot of tournaments lately or reaching finals. That means that you are a good player and deserve to be up there at the top. Great serve, beautiful backhand (not as good as Federer, but still...)The GS may be a mental thing for him, but maybe he can change that at Wimbledon. I hope so for him, because besides being a good player, he is a nice person (although that is what I think)

And he takes the game more seriously than literally all other players on the tour...Playing the game isn't the only thing that's needed to get to the top...Ljubicic is one of the most professional tennis players of the entire tour.

You are crazy.Ivan just doesn't like to play on dirty things.Grass and clay. But he proved that he can do well on clay.He was in semis at Rg.And in Wimby he will do well, too. You are a total idiot,We will see how he is bad, when the hardcourt will come. And then he will destroy everyone.HE IS A TOP 5 FOR A REASON.HE IS NOT A TOP 10 TURIST.HE IS IN TOP 10- 28 consusetive (bad spell sorry) weeks.WHEN YOU WILL UNDERSTAND THAT,THERE IS NOW TENNIS PLAYER IN THE WORLD HOW CAN BE BAD AND BE IN TOP 5 OR TOP 10.kARLOVIC HAS A FANTASTIC SERVE ,BUT HE ISN'T IN TOP 50,AT ALL.IVAN HAS A LOT OF THING, HE HAS A REPERTOAR OF SHOTS AND THAT'S THE REASON HE IS TOP5 AND HE WILL BE FOR A LONG TIME.and sorry,I can speak english wery well, but I'm not that well in typing

Theres a diference between, Ljubicic and nalbandian, davydenko, gaudio, gonzalez, hewitt, and more. The only time i saw ljubicic play well was in the last few matches in madrid. Since then i havent seen an amazing match from him. Davydenko, always an exciting player, should have a better chance of winning a GS. In my mind, gaudio and gonzalez are smarter players eventhough they might not be winning as much as ljubo is. When he has trouble serving, there is no match! He just loses his game plan and tries to stay in the rally.
Mauresmo-best woman to have never won a grandslam
Ljubicic-worst player to have ever been number 4!

If Ivan is ranked #4 it is based off of his results over the last year and how they compare to the results of the other players. He earned his ranking like everyone else, and it's neither his fault nor his concern that the "countless players that are superior" aren't posting results to compete with his own. It's not even like all of these countless superior players are suffering from injuries, either (and even if they were, that's sport, and crap happens).

Frankly, considering how many players start to wane or have long been on a steady decline when they reach the relatively advanced tennis age of 27, I think it's fabulous that Ivan can post such results and maintain such a ranking at this time. He deserves his ranking like everyone else.
Very well said!

didnt he say he feels like a no.2 player, or something like that? :haha:
You have to excuse him...Jerry S had probably drugged him

I've just seen Monfils hit the shot of the tournament after a superb rally with Ljubo at the net...and all Ljubo does is glare at him.

He should have shaken his hand it was that damn good

The worst player ranked #4? Not by a long shot! The worst player ranked #4 (#3 at one point, right behind Lendl and Edberg I believe) was....BRAD GILBERT!!!!!!!!!

Check it out...I believe the year was either 87 and 88!!!
