Greek athlete Voula Papachristou has been expelled from the Olympics after posting a “racist” tweet online.

The triple jumper was withdrawn by the Hellenic Olympic Committee following her comments mocking African immigrants and expressing support for a far-right party.

She tweeted: “With so many Africans in Greece… At least the West Nile mosquitoes will eat home made food!!!”

The committee said she was expelled from the team for "for statements contrary to the values and ideas of the Olympic movement".

She was shortly due to arrive in London for the competition.

In a statement, the athlete said: “I would like to express my heartfelt apologies for the unfortunate and tasteless joke I published on my personal Twitter account. I am very sorry and ashamed for the negative responses I triggered, since I never wanted to offend anyone, or to encroach human rights.

“My dream is connected to the Olympic Games and I could not possibly participate if I did not respect their values. Therefore, I could never believe in discrimination between human beings and races.

“I would like to apologize to all my friends and fellow athletes, who I may have insulted or shamed, the National Team, as well as the people and companies who support my athletic career. Finally, I would like to apologize to my coach and my family.”

I can sympathize with people who may not be racist, but just can't resist puns and double entendres. Which is why I don't tweet. In today's social media craze, political correctness always trumps clever wordplay.

But in the above case, I think her comment was just a hop, skip and jump away from undoubted racism.

Stephanie Rice was involved in a similar case, but in regards to homophobia. No offense to them, but seriously.... Female athletes

Exactly. You don't have to be racist to Asians, it is implied. Even if you're an Asian yourself.

How is making your eyes widescreen not a compliment?

You have missed the whole point. This time it was an internal matter of the Greek confederation.

Last time all China could have threatened was its own withdrawal - which, come to think of it, would have lowered the incidence of Chinese child labour.
Although it would have been interesting to see a team withdraw from its own Games.

I don't think her comment was strictly racist to be honest, surely unfortunate and an easy to bash 'joke' though. A bit dumb and 'innocent' from her part, yes. I can understand the decision but would be too harsh to judge and hate on her for it IMO.

Greece has become like an African-Asian ghetto these days because of its easy access from the east...they either get stranded there but even if they find the means to move forwards the other EU countries will deport them back to the country they entered the EU from and not their place of departure. There are more Africans and Asians illegal immigrants in Greece than in all the rest of the EU combined.

Though I do agree, her comment was naive and silly.

Funny guy this nastoff. Lets see Germany, France, Spain, UK, Italy, Belgium, Switzerland have more Africans than Greece.

Nastoff maybe is right and you are wrong. He said ''illegal'' immigrants. I did not find the numbers but did find two quotes saying that 90% of illegal immigrants to the EU last year entered through Greece. That number lends truth to the nastoff statement.

^^ I think when someone is too sensitive in some issues is due to some feeling of guilt or a tormented subconscious. For example if you show this illustation to children they will see innocent dolphins but if you show to adult they will see other thing very different.
