Some shocking news from Ben. Not a fan but big :hatoff: for him to speak out

"One thing that I just want to say before we're done. I've been a little bit shocked this week with how players have been treated by the broadcasters. I don't think that the guy who mocked Novak, I don't think that was just a single event. I've noticed it with different people, not just myself. I noticed it with Learner Tien in one of his matches. I think when he beat Medvedev his post-match interview, I thought it was kind of embarrassing and disrespectful that interview. There are some comments that have been made to me in post-match interviews by a couple of different guys, whether it was, Hey, Monfils is old enough to be your dad. Maybe he is your dad. Or today on the court, Hey, Ben, how does it feel that no matter who you play in your next match, no one is going to be cheering for you? I mean, may be true, but I just don't think the comment is respectful from a guy I've never met before in my life. I feel like broadcasters should be helping us grow our sport and help these athletes who just won matches on the biggest stage enjoy one of their biggest moments. I feel like there's just been a lot of negativity. I think that's something that needs to change."

They really ask him if Monfils is his daddy. I have no words :help:

I saw that on court interview after the Monfils match. I think the interviewer was just trying to make the point that there is a big age gap between Shelton and Monfils but they clearly have a lot of love for each other. It didn't quite come off and Shelton reacted as if he thought there were racist overtones because they are both black. I don't think that was intentional at all, just clumsily worded.

Excuses, excuses, excuses. There is a reason why Ben bring that up.

Shanghai Slam 2030. It would be better organized, players would be treated like royalty and revenue would be bigger as well.

Nobody needs Australia for shit, and nobody wants to travel there.

I've been a traditionalist when it comes to this issue in the past, but Australia has overstayed their welcome when it comes to hosting a Grand Slam.

Old black man can only be the father of young black man. This is more than mere disrespect...

Anyhow, starting to like Shelton but he's gotta start locking it at masters 1000

This.
And we saw again that user here know the feelings better than the player himself...

Wasn´t it Tien who was so angry that he take the mic from the interviewer and do the "interview" alone?

#12 ·
We are stressed or Ben is stressed? And it is no "Aussie humour" to treat player like this.

Ben Shelton - hats off to you! Bravo for you honest words. I can't believe the interviewer said to him that ""no one is going to be cheering for him"- totally disgusting! I am going to cheer for him and even wish him all the best - if he can win this GS it will be great for the sport.
I don't think that was the intent to mean he doesn't deserve to be cheered on. The idea is Shelton is playing either a home favourite De Minaur, or the world no.1, which means crowd support may not be on his side. Granted, the world no.1 is Sinner, rather than Federer or Nadal, but the point remains. Could the question be phrased in a more sensitive and less blunt manner? Yes.

Shelton is wrong here about the Monfils thing. The interviewer says ‚well, he‘s almost your dad‘. Shelton responds with ‚was that a black joke?‘ and laughs about it.

Now to suddenly act like he is offended by that is poor from him.

Anyone with half a brain knows it was simply a reference to the age gap between them.
It is Shelton being a bully.

Most bullies have been bullied themselves at some time, but now he is getting paid far more than the interviewers doesn't mean it is time to take it out on them.

His feelings are his feelings. It is not crazy to show some respect to players.
I will quote this here so everyone sees it and knows this is EXACTLY what happened.

@finishingmove

Do you know why it is called The Grand Slam of Asia Pacific? AO themselves chose that motto for marketing purposes in the early 2000s. It isn't because there is some flexibility as to where the Slam is hosted.

The Slam started in 1904 when Australia was called Australasia (though the status of Slam was adopted for all 4 at the same time in 1923). Back then, Singapore was still the Straights Settlement. Australia is one of the 15 founders of ITF, this Slam is as rigidly placed in the calendar as the Himalayas.

Yes, I didn't mention Shanghai because of its geographic location, but because China has the funds to build a massive complex for a Grand Slam (indoors even).

ITF headquarters wouldn't have to move, unless their wives are bored of living in Australia and want to see a city from the future ;)

I agree, I just watched Shelton's on court interview after the Sonego match, and that old bald Australian guy was a clown.

Honestly, they don't feel comfortable talking to a young black guy who is so confident and friendly. They have a stereotype of how he 'should' act, and Ben doesn't fit that.

How can someone write so much delusional content in merely two sentences!? I can't even decide what to pick on :D

WTF is Ben even talking about... "Or today on the court: Hey, Ben, how does it feel that no matter who you play in your next match, no one is going to be cheering for you?"

That's not what the interviewer said at all. He actually said that in Ben's SF match the crowd will likely be on either the home guy's (AdM) or the world #1's (Sinner) side [i.e. who the crowd will side with and not that no one would be cheering for Ben], and asked if Ben sees it that way. And Ben agreed that this is probably the case, but that he will also have people backing him. To which the interviewer replied: "Definitely... lots of support in your corner... lots of American flags throughout the crowd. Congratulations, through to the semis! Best of luck to you!"

Bunch of BS.

This guy is a tennis mug but hard to disagree with this opinion on this specific issue, especially when you watch the video.

I find most post-match interviews at this AO terrible. Petkovic should have been sacked after her first one. She makes players feel awkward and just doesn't have the right tools for the job

Petkovic interviewed Fonseca like he was a 7 year old child.

John Fitzgerald was so dumb struck that Tien managed to beat Medvedev he had no real questions but just trite cringeworthy statements that on 1 or 2 occasions Tien didn't even indulge in responding at all and look bored by it all.

Had 2nd hand embarrassment just watching and hearing it from the sidelines and couldn't bear to sit through any more of them.

Shelton has somewhat of a point.

AO isn't moving but maybe if the tournament ever moves to February or March then the China Open could become a major lead-in tournament like Rome is for RG and the Rogers Cup is for the US Open.

Shelton is definitely marketable. Yes he's arrogant, but he has swagger, he has game and he has personality when being interviewed. He's also shown that he's a big match player, with this being his second semifinal along with an additional quarterfinal from the past couple of years.

Certainly one to watch for the ATP if they're smart.

Feel like AO interviewers are getting a lot of stick for being ‘offensive’ when in reality they’re at utmost cringe. It’s just that most of the interviewers try to conduct interviews the same way Courier does, but most of them don’t have his wit or charisma to ask this kind of questions. Besides Courier got a connection to the tennis players since he is a former one too and always involved in the tennis world, much more than the likes of Petkovic.

So Courier is well respected, known for his banter, most of the other folks who get to interview the players are only known to Australian viewers and pretty sure the players themselves don’t even know them. So it’s a bit silly to pretend to be best buddies with some, as the vibe ain’t quite there.

To cut it short, much ado about absolutely nothing and tennis players (Djokovic included) should grow a thicker skin, AO otoh get folks who are a tad more serious

#48 ·
And why does he demand respect? Players are traditionally classless clowns for the most part. Don't show respect to anyone from fans, umpires, linesmen, their equipment, physios (with all the fake MTO) and most of all ball kids. Not long ago they demanded for kids to carry their dirty a$$ towels.

I have a (white British) colleague who moved to Australia and then left because he couldn’t stand the racism there. So maybe there’s a pattern there.

The AO will stay in A but imo Ben has a valid point.

How do you explain surging support for Reform?

#63 ·
Ben should be confident and if he starts going deep in big tournaments and winning slams he will have earned the right to be a bit arrogant.

#66 ·
Also if you're trying to joke with people you don't know it gives off vibes that you're trying too hard...chill out, be professional, joke with your wife and buddies

Tony Jones was f'in cringe

Trump won because America got soft.
Did commentator really say that Monfils is maybe Sheltons dad? Big difference between “he could be your dad” vs “he might be your dad”. I’m curious if Shelton simply misunderstood the interviewer.
