So the same Alcaraz who has been complaining all year about the (over)packed tennis calendar is now signed up for the new “Million Dollar 1 Point Slam” at the Australian Open. It’s an exhibition where amateurs play a single point against top pros for prize money.

The wear and tear will be minimal, but it still takes time and attention. Seems his schedule that he was complaining about, wasn’t quite full enough after all.

Harmless fun, or just adding noise to an already overloaded season?

Not quite. Alcaraz is one of 32 players taking part at Rod Laver Arena. Amateurs can qualify through events across Australia, and it’s not even clear if they might face each other early on. Each round is decided by a single point, with rock-paper-scissors deciding who serves. Win five rounds and you get the million. Everyone else just goes home with a good story.

What ? 1 point there's a lot of luck in that Net Cords for example. If the Amateur is good enough and hits an underarm serve then hit a net cord countering the pro's return it COULD happen.

Faaaaaaack why why why why

Im telling you if they can do this bs garbage they can do both tours ALL STAR WEEKEND with these games and much more. I posted this in one of the Laver Cup threads. Tennis is so short sighted.

Check OPs link... this was done already last year. These type of events are part of the preceding week entertainment. OPs take is bizarre, in that this would somehow be extremely taxing. I recall they also had the Tie Break Tens just before AO one year. This year they also had some charity matches:

So he’s already at the venue and he’ll be playing against amateurs? Sounds like an extremely light practise session for him, not exactly a scheduling “gotcha” moment.

Talking about tennis stars taking part in unusual events before slams, here's a story I posted in the Love and Nostalgia thread last year...

In recent tributes to Irish tennis player and Davis Cup captain Matt Doyle, who died recently, I came across mention of an charity event he helped to organise in 1989. A boxing exhibition between tennis stars, including Wilander and McEnroe, held in Dublin the week before Wimbledon to raise money for famine relief in Africa. There was a gentleman’s agreement that no one would go for a KO but that did not stop McEnroe punching Wilander in the face. “I was a bit surprised,” admitted Mats, “but I just concentrated on pummelling John in the ribs!”

The following week, when McEnroe and Wilander met in the QFs in Wimbledon, they joked to each other about their various aches and pains. McEnroe: "I can't get my arm up to serve, man." Wilander: "There's still blood coming out of my nose!"

Nice story. It's certainly a unique way to prepare for a slam. Difficult to imagine it happening nowadays.
