Mark Philippoussis' knee injury is not as bad as first had been feared, the Australian has been told.
The former US Open runner-up retired from his first round match against Sjeng Schalken after a fall and left the court in tears.

Philippoussis has already had surgery three times on his left knee and there had been fears that if the injury were serious, he would be forced to retire from the game.

An MRI scan at his home in Miami revealed that Philippoussis had hyper-extended his knee, causing a bone injury.

No surgery will be necessary but the 25-year-old will miss the rest of the season, including Australia's Davis Cup tie against India next month.

"I'm delighted the injury is not as severe as I first thought and I will be able to continue to show improvement and get better in the future," Philippoussis said in a statement.

"I'm obviously upset at having the injury and that I will have to miss the Davis Cup tie in Adelaide and the upcoming tour events," he added.

Philippoussis was recalled to the Australian Davis Cup team earlier this month after a two-year absence caused by a falling-out with the team coaches.

This is better than nothing, but missing the rest of the season... :sigh: Thankfully his outlook about everything these days is a lot more positive, so I hope that can pull him through
