I know it's seen as unimportant by a fair few but it's definitely a little odd that time and time again he doesn't manage to defend titles outside of clay..even 250s.

The whole defending titles concept is utterly ridiculous. It's about WINNING titles not defending them the next year.
I thought Nadaltards were proud of Nadal's longevity in winning GS titles X years in a row. Or does longevity only count when it's in his advantage, as per usual?

Say what you want but it is more than a little surprising that Nadal hasn't done it till now...not even in a 250 outside clay. Djokovic has done it on indoor HC and outdoor HC...Federer's done it on grass, HC, clay..indoors and outdoors and he nearly did it on even carpet.

Yet another anti-Nadal thread by someone who was a Nadal fanatic one month ago.

So if Djokovic never defends a title on clay that will hurt his legacy? I don't think so.
1)Djokovic is not a GOAT contender and likely never will be.
2)Djokovic has at least done it both indoors and outdoors. With Nadal it's just outdoors and that on clay.
3)Nadal's won way more titles than Djokovic.

Good post. Also, Nadal's been a total roadblock on clay, so it's a bit naive to blame Fed/Nole to not defend a title off clay. Hopefully Nole defends Rome this year.

What's preventing Nadal, Berrer?

1)Mono Fed
2)Berdych
3 and 4)0 time USO Champ+1 time champ Djokovic+Youzhny/Gasquet in semis
5)Couldn't win on Rebound Ace. Only managed to do it once it was changed to plexi.

To be honest he had no business winning this tournament last year, he was awful for most of it but no one was able to finish the job. I often forgot that he actually took the title. But since then people have been a lot better at taking advantage when he is playing poorly.

He has obviously struggled a lot more with his layoffs / comeback this time around - his 2013 comeback was excellently strategically managed, this one has been all over the place with returning to Asia after wrist troubles, the appendicitis saga and playing Basel before getting surgery for it, and then coming back quickly for the beginning of the season after his appendectomy.
