Fifth-seeded Daniela Hantuchova defeated Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-7 (2), 7-6 (2), 6-0 Tuesday in the opening round at the Fortis Championships. In other matches, seventh-seeded Dinara Safina, last year's runner-up, beat local favorite Anne Kremer 7-5, 6-2. Eighth-seeded Silvia Farina was beaten 6-2, 6-0 by Israel's Anna Smashnova, who has won two events this season.
