Will be interesting to see if PMac sticks with Blake, or decides to give Fish an airing for this tie. If I were in his shoes, I'd probably stay with Blake...still in pretty good form, and I think he has the game more suited to hitting through Gasquet and Tsonga...although Mardy could be a significant threat if he serve-volleys as well. A tough one.

Hmmm, what do you mean? Llodra is on the team.
Forget can still change in last minute and let Clément-Llodra play in doubles and pick 2 from the 3 other guys for the singles (depending on who seems to be in better form). Otherwise, he can pick Llodra-Tsonga, Gasquet-Tsonga, Llodra-Gasquet... Only PHM isn't an option in doubles.

PHM had said he wasn't eager to go to Salem as the 5th man, while Clément doesn't mind, so Forget pretty much had to nominate this team, I don't find it surprising. And it makes sense anyway.

Cocktail stories aside, that wasn't why we were talking. We had come to discuss the U.S.-France Davis Cup tie in Winston-Salem, April 11-13. Where McEnroe's job is made simpler by knowing well in advance who he'll play (Andy Roddick and James Blake in singles and the Bryan brothers in doubles), Forget has decisions to make.

He may, in fact, take six players to North Carolina. He doesn't have to pare his list to four until April 10, the day of the draw.

"The French boys are all close and I want to make sure I make the right choice," he said, explaining why he's been here throughout the Sony Ericsson Open. "How they behave on the court, what's good and what they can improve. Just to get a feel for the guys."

Two weeks ago it seemed clear enough that Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga would play singles and Arnaud Clement would team with Michael Llodra in doubles. But Gasquet lost to Blake at Indian Wells, possibly a performance that costs him a spot in the side because Blake now has a psychological edge. And then Gasquet lost his opening match here to Dmitry Tursunov, which hurt a little more.

"Richard won't have the confidence he would if he was going into the semis here," said Forget. "On the other hand, he's going to work harder to be ready," said Forget. And then there is Tsonga, who lost his third-round match here to countryman Julien Benneteau. France is not gaining momentum here.

As for Tsonga, he's played only one Davis Cup match, in the round of 16 this year against Romania and needed four sets to beat Andrei Pavel, who is slowly fading toward retirement.

Paul-Henri Mathieu, who plays Rafael Nadal today, suddenly becomes a bigger factor in the singles.

The winner of this tie plays the winner of Germany vs. Spain, right after Wimbledon.

I'll be truly shocked if Clement is not named to the team at the draw. They actually have a great shot at the Bryans and would be stupid to not attempt it

I agree it would be the rational choice. Most probably Forget has not decided between Gasquet and PHM so he wants to see both of them in practice before committing to a decision. Plus he keeps the additional option of going with Gasquet-Tsonga for the doubles. The downside is obviously that the one who will eventually be left out of the team might not be happy to be there at all.

Well Charlie Bricker said Forget is probably going to bring all 6 to practice week. Since he can make the changes before the draw anyway, why not nominate his best doubles team? It just seems odd. I don't think the Bryans would lose to Gasquet/Tsonga twice in a row but I think losing to Clement/Llodra is a real possibility if not even likelihood. Just seems bizarre to me but I'm sure he knows what he's doing.

As I said, this nomination is just a way to keep all his options open in singles imo. PHM said in Miami it sucks for him to go to Salem as the 5th player, it's not a surprise to see him officially on the team and not just as 5th player. And Forget probably sincerely doesn't know yet which players he will pick. So he's nominating the 3 of them and they'll have to prove themselves in training. That's how I understand it. He's putting them on the same level for the time being.

I'm sure Forget is seriously considering the Clément-Llodra option too and Clément is on the team as much as the other guys for him. Llodra keeps saying in interviews he prefers to play with Clément.

I think Tsonga is everything but a lock too. He was playing very poorly in Miami (and also partly in IW), he'll have to do much better in training.

He's also a bit injured at the left hand - he decided to play IW and Miami despite of this injury, which is fine as long as he plays for himself, but if he's not 100% fit, he shouldn't play for the team.

It really is completely open on the French side atm.

sry, I meant Mathieu instead of Clement.

I think Gasquet is a MUST be, maybe Mathieu replacing Tsonga, who is having poor matches latetly.

But Clement/Llodra is the best choice for doubles.

Well he's registered at the hotel and the twins are expecting them, so it will be no surprise at all to see Llodra/Clement the French doubles team :)

Clement replaces Tsonga

I'm sorry that Tsonga is unable to play, but this enables Guy Forget to correct his original mistake. For the first time in three years, we Yanks don't have a 1-0 lead before the tie even starts. If Clement and Llodra can beat the Bryans on Centre Court, they can definitely beat them in a Davis Cup match, and if Gasquet grows a pair between now and Friday, the French could actually.....(gulp).....win.

Not looking likely.

His problem will be with trying to beat Roddick, anyway. His fightback at Wimbledon last year was outstanding, but I think it says a lot that Roddick was able to go up 2 sets and a break.
