Thiem was up a break in the fifth set, but Verdasco hung strong.

Verdasco awaits the winner of Wawrinka-Estrella Burgos, which is about to start.

So close....

Still, positives - Domi has learnt how to play on grass. Huge progess this season. If he could only find his 1st serve too....

Great to see Verdasco showing so much fight this week, but have to think that between his first two matches, he'll be somewhere between figurative walkover and literal walkover in 3R- though it isn't like he plays long points, so who knows

:yeah: Back to back 5 set wins for Verdasco. Opportunity for some real heroics in the next round, hope he manages it. We know he can do very well on grass on his day, hopefully has a good one on Friday.

Unlucky for Thiem getting so close, did quite well in this tournament considering the expectations for his game on grass.

Dominichoke Thiem, should have at least take the fifth set where he led 3-1 IIRC with break up and he immediately lost his serve after a close and hard-fought match. However, kudos to Verdasco who displayed again his strong fighting spirit and didn't give himself up. Deserved win all in all and Wawrinka is beatable on grass if the Spaniard is on fire. Verdasco is leading the h2h here against Stan :yeah:

Ugh Thiem. Disappointing loss despite playing a tough opponent on his worst surface. Was 3-1 up in the 5th but Verdasco broke back then broke Thiem at 4-4. Would've been a nice 3rd round against Stan.

A bit insecure after being a break up in 5th at 3-1 but his game on grass is improving, so it's a good thing.

Impressive fightback from Verdasco who drew energy from an adoring crowd, all of whom seemed to be supporting him. I don't know if he is just a sentiment favourite or if they admire is fighting spirit and ballstriking but he was a very popular winner today. He certainly hit a lot of huge winners but he was also hopeless for much of the match and hit 12 DFs. As soon as he broke back in the 5th, it was cleat there was only going to be one winner.

Thiem does seem to be finding his feet on grass but Verdasco was far from his best and was there for the taking today. If you don't convert your BP opportunities and allow yourself to be broken immediately after breaking in the 5th, you deserve to lose.

I wonder if Verdaso will have anything left against Wawrinka (or Estrella)
