The US Open being the whores they are to the TV networks, have 1st round matches on the Wednesday, so they can show more matches in theory and Hewitt was the lucky guy to get Wed.
I love having the first round played over the first three days of the US Open. I get to see so many more matches than I would if they used 2 days for the first round. I hope they never change it.
Considering it's not fair for the players, but that's not an issue.

Go US Open! :rocker2: More wham for your slam. ;)
I think the scheduling should be over 2 days like the other Slams. You have a situation where players can be in the 3rd round before some players have even played their 1st round. And when Andy and Andre were on the same half there was no way they'd play the same day when they could play them on two consecutive nights for TV.

EDIT - if Judio's post is right then I'm wrong here. I just wanted to see Lleyton today damnit! :p
It should be fair for all players, and starting 2nd round matches, before 1st round matches isn't exactly fair, though since they have Super Saturday, the fairness for the players isn't apparent in this situation, yes that includes all players.

Yes, there's a degree of unfairness to the players, but not always the way you'd think. Some players don't like having two days between their matches, because they think it upsets their match-toughness. Back in the 90s, I heard several players say, when asked about this, that they would prefer to play their first match on a show court on Wednesday than play on an outer court on Monday or Tuesday. They wanted the atmosphere on Armstrong or the Grandstand.

There's always something for players and fans to bitch about at a slam. At the US Open, it's the fifth-set TB and the three-day first round. The great players will win despite everything.

The 2003 fiasco is the problem that should have been lessened with better scheduling. Players do want to start the tournament and not twiddle their thumbs until Wed, unless there is an injury which can help them gian time.

It depends on which players were asked. I remember Krickstein being very fair and understanding why some of the non-US players didn't like the tournament, the scheduling was the main issue. It's not just about the top players.

Agreed on that for sure, but the 3 day 1st round is something that should go and that irritates me even more than the 5th set TB.

well, Hewitt would probably play early afterooon & on Thursday he will play a night match so he will have enough time to recuparate. Some tournaments like French Open don't have night sessions.

Lleyton always requests playing the first match on the day schedule, so if he was offered the choice of playing the second night match on Tuesday or the first day match on Wednesday (although I doubt he was), he would have gone with the Wednesday match.
Coz US Open sucks

They don't need them and they use more of the courts and they have daylight until 9pm and Wimbledon needs a roof more than night sessions. Difference they get a day to recover from their matches.
Funny how the US Open detractors whine about the supposed biased scheduling of players while conveniently forgetting that this kind of scheduling happens at ALL slams, and it's not always in favor of the evil Americans:

And I agree with Socket: the best players will adapt and find a way to get through their draw. They always do anyway, regardless of whether the evil American Agassi plays at night or not. :)
 Americans are so paranoid
You know, the US Open sucks completely, it has the first round over three days  ;)

Unless all players could play at the same time on the same court and in the same conditions, it's never 100% fair, people will whine whatever scheduling they get. If it's not about three days first round, then they would cry about the court scheduling or asking to get rid off night sessions... why does my fav only play on court #3 and not on Armstrong? why are the American players favoured? Roddick has the best match scheduling... things like that, we've had it (almost) all

I think the USTA should just bar non-Americans from playing, that'll shut up the complainers (well, most of them). ;) ;)
