Nalbandian is currently #9 (largely thanks to winning Madrid and Paris) and three of the five optionals that he is now sitting on are worth zero points yet he hasn't signed up to play in any significant upcoming optionals like Rotterdam, San Jose, Memphis or Dubai.

How serious is he about building up the match fitness and consistency to one day win a Grand Slam title when he hardly botheres with any optionals at all?

If he played more optionals he could be back in the top 5.

Although he can play on clay superb too, his most successful tournaments have been indoor so it was logical to play in Marseille and Rotterdam IMO (specially after Madrid and Paris titles ) And continue his unbeaten indoor run but he has chosen to play on clay.

Instead of playing two very insignificant clay court tournaments you'd think he would instead player two significant hard court tournaments like San Jose and Dubai.

He should at least be playing Dubai. If he wants to win a major one day he should be playing more optionals where the big names are playing (and Dubai has so many points on offer!).

Or on a positive note, maybe the clay court tournaments he has decided to play shows that he is very serious about the upcoming clay court tournaments and wants to make himself a credible contender at the French Open.

The Copa Telmex isn't insignificant at all for any Argentinean player, and I think it's great that Nalbandian, who is the best active South American player at the moment, has opted to take part in the SA claycourt swing.

No, it just makes sense to play his home tournament. Not much to read into it.

San Jose is just as much of a MM tournament, if not more so. :lol:
