Why hasn't Federer tried bulking?

6794 Views 33 Replies 28 Participants Last post by  ClutchOn&Win
When you look at his left arm you wonder why he doesn't bulk up? He seems fit but I've always wondered how much would he have benefitted from clean bulking.

So why doesn't he just hit the weights hard and gain some real muscle? You know just the regular bodybuilding.

Thoughts?

I've been thinking about the same thing too. He doesn't need to be as bulky as Nadal, but surely he can work out to be as fit as Djokovic or at least Wawrinka. His BH would have surely improved with increased upper body strength.
he's older that would be an extremely silly thing to do. could injure himself and frankly the biggest issue would be it might kill his speed

I've thought this too. Nole's lost a bit of weight too have you noticed? Murray looks awesome right now seriously. Remember how Carlos Moya looked back in his prime? I think Fed could really benefit from Moya's shape.

Well thats true. Fed looked incredibly fit back in the day like 04-06 pretty much but why has he lost so much muscle mass? Nadal's lost hair but he hasn't become skinny.

this, basically.

Nadal is not skinny but he has certainly lost a lot of muscle mass, look at his pictures during his younger days, especially during RG 08, AO 09, his arms were huge, now it's nothing compared back then really.

I agree with MDS.
I don't think that's even remotely close to how it works. "Federer should get a Djokovic body and ta-da he gets speed, flexibility and power combined" lel. Changes like that would just slow him down and he'll probably injure himself.

I'd say Fed lost muscle after mono.
I cannot find the article or video.

But basically Fed's physique is really beneficial to tennis.

This is all based off of memory, so I could be wrong.

-He has less impact on his body (due to low body weight), meaning less injuries
-His technique on Forehand and Serve is very technically sound and he generates a lot of his power from the body and not the arm.
-Less body weight means less muscle to carry around giving him better foot work and speed.

Like I said based off of memory, but those were the points that stuck out in my head.

Fed is extremely fit , IMO if he was as Nadal or Murray he could have more injuries over the years.
Even now at 33 he could challenge best players who are 5 or 6 years younger than him. Just watch him at DCF against Gasquet and in his double' match . He is a great clay player but his matches vs Nadal just killed his motivation to play on clay. What is the point to play and get to F only to meet Nadal and lose??? But W2008 killed their rivalry. :)
Since when did hypertrophy become necessary to improving motor fitness?

Because this is tennis and not weightlifting or boxing. Bigger muscles don't necessarily mean you can swing your arm faster (i.e. hit the ball harder). Ofc there is also the downside of having more weight which puts more pressure on your body.

PS: According to the ATP-Website Federer has actually the same weight than Rafa (85kg) but thats surely not true...
Well Fed has played more than 1200 matches and at 33 he played 83 matches last year. I think he is #2 right now. If that does not show
how fit Federer is than i do not know what else can do it?!
Perhaps this is the reason Fed isn't injured as much as Dull and others? Tiger Woods bulked up because he had a complex about being so skinny (and about golfers not being considered athletes) and it pretty much wrecked his career.
He's not stupid. He has his priorities in the right place.
