All Rafa does is hit with heavy topspin deep mid court and waits for Berdych to miss left and right!

The better question is: why does Berdych always wilt vs Nadal and Djokovic, but plays the matches of his life vs Murray and Federer?

Because most meetings are on clay. Try to normalize the H2Hs on the whole season and the H2Hs are not in Rafa's favor!
Federer hasn't won an important match on any surface against Nadal in nearly 7 years (Wimbledon 2007). Nadal is 17-4 against him since the end of the 2007 season (and only 8 of the 21 matches were on clay). The guy's in his head...same for Berdych.

It's not like he has not tried. But Nadal simply never goes away.

Try playing against a guy that never misses in the most important points. Ex: AO 2009. On BP in the 3rd set, Nadal simply could not miss

It's not about not trying. It's about having a mental block against an opponent. It occurs when the belief just isn't there.

what are the "important matches" that Fed had a mental block vs. Nadal since 2007? Surely not in wimby 08 or AO 09. Fed played quite well in the AO 2011 match as well.
I think he kinda has a mental block. In their first 2 AO matches, Federer always lost the 3rd set tiebreak, which would have given him a 2 sets to 1 lead in both matches. Losing that 3rd set tiebreak both times shows a lack of confidence. When he feels like he is closing on a lead against Nadal, he falters for some reason.

Lack of confidence

It's Madrid 2006. Berdych started off well in his matches against Nadal, going 3-1 including the infamous Madrid win. But Berdych hasn't won since then, on any surface.

Berdych's strategy against Nadal is so bad that he can't win. The strategy may be influenced by emotion though. He seems willing to let Nadal just hit winner after winner with his running forehand.

Unfortunate for him that the one time he really brought it was on a particularly slow AO court.

The simple answer is that he struggles to hit Nadal's ball. He likes to take measure swings at the ball with planted feet....and lacks the ability to adjust to the jumping ball.
