1 win in 14 attempts might have something to do with it.

Will this perceived mental block persist in the future? That remains to be seen but there is good reason to think he has dispelled it. I'm sure Stan has more confidence in his abilities and getting a positive result against Federer than he has before and rightfully so. Besides the confidence may emanate from being Swiss #1 and the winner of the last grand slam tournament, Magnus Norman seems to have a good effect on the mentality of the players he coaches.

because there have been several matches where he could clearly live with Federer but when things got tight he bent over?

Because he has been living in Federer's shadow since he came on tour. The same reason why so many Spaniards have a mental block vs Nadal.

He might have choked here and there, but generally speaking Federer is simply a superior tennis player with better technique, bigger variety, greater stamina and reflexes etc.

He doesn't, just like how federer doesn't have a mental block against nadal, both are just shitter than the other guy because of the way their respective styles match up. Until now, Stan has always been a brainless ballbasher which federer deals well against, hence the lopsided H2H result.

You guys need to stop pretending to be armchair psychologists

He played the highest quality of the semifinalists. When Stan, completely rolls over in the final though, you will see why.

It's just a tactic the anti-Fed armada is using to imply that Stan should actually win his matches against Fed, as if he wasn't an inferior player! :spit:

Right... Surely it'll be just as easy to take the initiative against Fed as it was against Ferrer... Surely!

Federer is the last top 10 player for Stan to beat at his prime, and surely the most difficult, like the final boss in Game, hence the mental issue, cause you know that it's close to game ending, you get excited and bum, mistakenly die. It's really touch.
But still, the game has to end by one way or another, mark my word, Stan will finally beat Roger at a big Stage and prove that he 's the best tennis player atm, that's NID.
