Why are tall players such as Marat Safin, Richard Krajicek, Goran Ivanisevic, Mark Philippoussis, Marc Rosset and Carlos Moya so inury prone? It's a mystery to me! Is it because they are so tall that are more vulnerable than smaller players are to injuries and especially leg injuries?

I thought Marat Safin would become a great player. But his career is unfortunately taking a turn for the worse. And the injuries don't help. If it's not his shoulder it's his back! And now it's a wrist injury! :( After he won the 2000 U.S. Open I thought Safin could win 5 or more grand slams. But now I don't see that happening. All of these injuries add up and take their toll. Have anyone else besides me noticed that Marat Safin at the age of 22 already doesn't serve as well or as powerfully as he used to?

I wish the big players in men's tennis such as Marat Safin could stay healthy. But I unfortunately don't see that happening. History has a way of repeating itself. And so do injuries to tall men's tennis players!

Well I haven't taken a human kinetics course in a couple years.

But the taller you are, the more pressure you put on your lower points - especially your knees. You have to bend more, usually are carrying more weight on your frame, etc etc.

I can not give a detailed kinetic explanation for this, since my memory is swiped clean of all that stuff. Perhaps that little bit helped?

Becca's point seems to be very likely to be true. Tall players also have problems with lower back injuries.

And in case of Marat, a player of his stature and class should have a permanent physio trainer travelling with him. But, sadly, Marat seems to know better what he needs

Becca, your explanation did help, and it makes total sense. You sure are bright! :)

But since I've been following tennis since the early 1980's there hasn't been a great player 6'4" tall or taller. Why is that? Boris Becker is 6'3" tall. So he missed by an inch. When I first saw Goran Ivanisevic, Richard Krajicek and Marat Safin play I thought they would become great players, but they haven't. Now Safin still has a chance to become the first great tennis player standing 6'4" tall or taller. But he'll have to stay healthy for a couple of years to become a great player. And staying healthy is proving to be difficult for him to do! :(

Zosse, you're right about how Marat Safin needs to have his own physical therapist travel with him on the tour.

Croat, in my opinion, a tennis player who has won one grand slam title cannot be considered a great tennis player.
so how many slams has to win a player to considered a great player for u?who r great players in ur opinion?

I think you have to put things in perspective and ask yourself a question: who will remember tennis players with just 1 slam title after, say, 20 years?

When people talk about Sampras they say - 14 times Grand Slam champion. Do you know how many other titles he has? Do you think casual fans care about these other titles?

Goran, Richard, Marat...they are all good players who won a slam. But IMO, they are better than one slam and hence they could be even greater than they are already. And too bad the injuries have prevented them from being even more successful.

Can someone show costaslam2 where the caps lock button is? Or is low cap. doesn't exist in his language which can't really be classified as English? I don't think he needs more pills, he obviously had too much already.

I'm no tennis expert so I don't know why they get injured so quick. I think Marat, Goran and Richard are good tennisplayers. They might have just one GS title and a bunch of other titles, but for me they're great players who have achieved a lot in tennis and Marat who's the youngest of the 3 will achieve even more.

About Marat, he does have his own physical trainer. His name is Anatoly Glebov. You might have seen him during one of his matches. He's bald and often wears sunglasses.

Yes, I've seen him. I know that Marat is happy after Anatoly's massages. But I doubt his abilities as a proper physio because Marat seems to get injured quite a lot which would suggest that something is not working. By saying that he needs a physio I meant that he must have a highly skilled professional working for him, who knows the specific health issues related to tennis and knows Marat's body better than his own wife's :D.
