Both players have won two grand slams and won Davis Cup, as well as a few AMS thrown in the bag.

It's an interesting debate because both men's achievements are not far off identical.

But to be fair Safin has won two Davis Cups to Hewitt's one (can someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not sure if he played 1999) and more AMS titles... that's what makes this an interesting comparison.

Take into account also who both men beat en route to their titles and period spent at world no 1.

I know that Hewitt is labelled by many people as a transitional no. 1, but it's worth remembering that Safin is just over a year older than Hewitt. When Hewitt was the top dog in men's tennis, Safin was part of that 'weak era'.
In my opinion Hewitt is clearly the more successful player out of the two.

Great stats. Safin has the AMS events over Hewitt but other than that there are no more advantages for the Russian.

Hewitt by a small margin is the better.

I agree that Hewitt has had the stronger career, and also got the most out of his ability, but it has to be taken into account Safin's injuries have made his career stop start at times.

Jaap is right though.

Safin may be more talented but he didn't capitalize on it. Hewitt has definitely had a much more successful career simply because he far more consistent than Marat.

Hewitt has more titles but Safin is more talented and his career has been stopped because of injuries so... my heart goes to Safin

Talent doesn't have anything to do with the achievements of a player. Obviously, Hewitt's has had a better career so far. They both have similar GS results but Marat has never won Tennis Masters Cup and has less ATP titles.

I would take Safin's career achievements over Roddick's for the following reasons:
- He has won 2 grand slam titles while Roddick has won 1.
- He has won 5 masters series titles while Roddick has won 4.
- He has reached the QF stage at all 4 grand slams, while Roddick has never progressed beyond the 3rd round at Roland Garros.
- Safin won his masters series titles across outdoor hard, indoor hard and carpet, while Roddick's 4 masters series titles all came on outdoor hard (although the Cincy courts are fast, the Montreal ones are midpaced, and the Miami ones are slow, so that was still hugely impressive).
