Masha is playing patty for the championship, Roddick has Isner, who do you think will have the easier road to victory, Roddick or Masha?

that's one of the difference between tennis and wta. in tennis a no 200 player is still competitive, in wta a no 30 is usually not competitive - against the elite players.

Sharapova will beat Patty easily with a bagel thrown in. Roddick will struggle in three sets and two of them are tie breaks. But he will pull the victory. :D

Maria. Btw, I support your thread if only for the fact that it concerns an ATP player. The two matches come at the same time, hence the mention of Maria, right? Keep up.

Number 200 in the mens is Roko Karanusic. The guy can be competitive against a few reasonable players, but i think his best result in terms of beating guys higher than him in the rankings is a win over Mahut in Poland. Mahut was around number 65 at the time. Hardly competitive against the likes of Roddick ;)
The reason why mens matches are likely to be closer is because they have bigger serves. Therefore, players with very little talent when compared to the best are made to look a lot better than they are cos of a huge serve.

Estoril this year in the wta was won by the world number 176. I'm not suggesting that this proves she can beat the best in the wta, but she did win a tournament with the likes of Safarova in it.

As for number 30 in the world not being competitive with top wta players well, let's examine Sharapova's record this year as it's her that the thread is about. Pin (ranked 107 at the time) took Sharapova to 9-7 in the final set in Australia, Zvonereva (20) beat Sharapova at Indian Wells and Rezai (59) beat Sharapova in Istanbul.

I agree that men's matches are much closer in terms of scoreline. There's really no such thing as men winning 6-0, 6-0 whereas in women's matches, especially the earlier rounds, you would see a 45 minute demolishing of a lower ranked player. However there are sometimes huge upsets too such as Bartoli defeating Henin and Mauresmo losing at Wimbledon.

Roddick has a much better chance of winning today. Schnyder played Sharapova a very close match at this tournament last year. Sharapova isn't as good now as a year ago.
Schnyder has a big chance today.
