He has a good shot after the Aus Open...He has nothing tom defend at Year end and Melbourne.(and Us open as well)..It depens on Federers results, but if Nadal gets on of these titles he will be the next

Realistically, I don't think he will anytime in the near future. If ever, I feel that it'll at least take till sometime in 2008. At the moment Federer is just too good and above all, TOO CONSISTENT. Yes, Federer has lost a few finals to Nadal, with most of them on Clay and all. But who else has Federer loss too? Even in the past two years, there has only been a handfull (not even really) of players that have beaten him. I even know them off the top of my head, but I won't bother naming them. So I believe while Nadal will occasionally beat Fed in finals, Fed will just continue making final, after final, after final, and winning most of them. While Nadal will make many finals, but continue to also have that occasional hick-up, and be upset before the final. That will be why the gap in points will not close completely anytime soon.

Nadal will become #1 when Federer becomes bored with tennis and starts tanking some matches. Not sure when it will happen, but by then, there might be some other #1 contenders besides Rafa. So we will see.
Only if Roger doesn't do jack for the rest of the season, doesn't qualify for semis in TMC, and loses early in AO - go figure how likely that's gonna happen.DrJules said:

Vilas' failure to become number 1 was related to the way computer points were awarded. In 1977 he won 2 grand slams and won in total around 16? tournaments in total. Connors won 0 grand slams and fewer tournaments that year, but ended the year number 1. In the early years of the ranking sytem it produced some weird rankings.Norrage said:
