Sampras: his (fast)Grass competition was a who's who of surface specialists : Becker, Ivanisavic, Rafter, Edberg, Henman, Krajicek ,Stich ..All of these guys either tanked or underpermored at RG just to go all out for Wimbledon almost every year...

Going 7-0 in Wimbledon Finals is might impressive vs. that field..There is a mystique about going undefeaTed in a particular Slam Final for that long..

Federer needs another W to be nudge for him for Grass GOAT.

Pete would've eaten Fed on pre-2001 grass.

When two people have won as much as they have at one Slam then for me it comes down less to the statistics and more to what they were up against and the tennis they produced. I believe Sampras played even better grass court tennis than Federer did, and so as a package, Sampras was the best in my opinion. I don't mean to put down Federer when I say this but if he wins an 8th Wimbledon he may be the "greatest" but he wouldn't be the best unless he pulled out a hitherto unseen level of performance.

You mean exactly to put Federer down . If 19 years old Fed beat Sampras in 4rd at his best court when Sampras is at 29 then you can not say he is better than Federer. How is he better ?! Did Sampras get to F after 2001 at least once if he did like so much to play on grass?! Federer at 33 with 4 kids get to Final with much more matches in his legs than Sampras!

Most of the justification for Sampras in this thread goes like - because we don't want to say Federer, end of argument.

By the same token, Nadal's not greatest on clay because he's had to contend with mugs and favourable match-ups.
Fraud at Wimbledon - 7 titles, 73:9 (92%), 2 lost Finals
Sampras at Wimbledon - 7 titles, 63:7 (90%), 0 lost Finals

Rafa at Roland Garros - 9 titles, 66:1 (99%), 0 lost Finals
*insert a random Fraudturd's candidate for the Greatest on Clay here - ??? ???

Fraud is not the undisputed Greatest of ANYTHING :haha:
