I still think Federer.
I would say Tommy Haas.
Nobody, before anybody among those listed surpass Safin's career accomplishments he would have won another tournament and gained the confidence he's looking for or as he said he'll go crazy, lmao!

By Safin's achievements I assume you mean US Open title AND reaching year end number one (since Safin was only number two) regardless of age? None of those on the list is even close. They must win the US Open, Hewitt must lose early, and they have to have a spectacular indoor season to do this, all the same time with Hewitt faltering. I don't see it happening this year. And who knows who will be hot next year.

If you mean by winning two Slams before Safin does...Haas has a good shot at both US Open '02 and Aus Open '03, but it's doubtful he will keep his head (and shoulder) screwed on long enough to do so. (Wishful think though) Federer's form is lacking at the moment and none of the others on the list seem to have the game to be able to handle both hard court and Rebound Ace with equal aplomb.

I think that in the next few slams Safin will win another, and make it a littler harder to pass him ;)

Of the above I agree with Lurker that Haas is potentially the most likely, but mentally it won't happen.
Tommy Haas has the best game from those listed

Marat will win another slam or 2 by end of 2003.

i don't see any of them getting to #1 just yet either
Tommy Haas or Nobody.
18 years later Roger destroyed them all :D.Who would have thought.
Marat would wipe the floor with today's glorified weak era pushing vultures.

Digging this thread up is proof that pandemic quarantining going to certain MTFers heads.
Safin is a king.

Had a great career I don't care what anyone says.
Could’ve/should’ve been but decided instead to b a candidate for ‘king‘ of playboys.

Those who might've read this thread some five years later i.e. after USO'07 finals and Federer's 12th slam title vs guy that nobody would've thought would go on to win more big titles than still active Goaterer.
I voted for Federer. Just a hunch

However, the voting should have been closed in 2002, it's more fun to watch the vintage vote than the update :)
