In essence, I agree with you. Surface homogenization has him a terribly hard beat anywhere. Even on grass, despite poor surface movement, the slowness of conditions allow his peerless coverages to win him so many otherwise futile points. Talented ballbashers who can punch through tardy conditions offer the main resistance. Sadly (for non-fans) they are few in number.

He is definitely not the same animal away from Center Court grass.

Most of the top players prefer hardcourt, so he just plain has more opponents that can beat him at the US Open than at Wimbledon. That said, he is a threat on every surface.
