This is a dumb question. I mean Vacherot was ranked 204th in the world before this event. Who could have even predicted him making it far in the tournament, let alone winning? It’s one of the most impressive things to see someone who isn’t even top 200 end up winning one of the biggest titles. He played way above his ranking, and that’s the very impressive part. Federer was probably the 2nd favorite to win in 2019.

Hard to say.

In 2019 even though Federer was 38 y/o we knew he was playing at a very high level. Much higher than what Novak has played at this year.

Vacherot though has had the single greatest Cinderella run we've seen in a long, long time maybe ever. Even greater than when Emma Raducanu won the US Open. It's going to take a long time before the shock goes away.

Federer wasn't 38 years old at Wimbledon 2019, though :wavey:
Unlike King during the last 3 Slams
38-year-old Federer lost to Dimitrov at the US Open QF. Imagine Djokovic losing in the 2025 RG QF to 2025 Tsitsipas or Rublev. That would be a fair comparison

It depends on what is meant by "impressive." In general, reaching a Wimbledon final is more impressive than winning Shanghai.

However, if you mean impressive as in "surprising given the circumstances," then Vacherot's run is more impressive because of his ranking and what he had achieved before.

Federer was still a top 3 player in 2019 and the second favourite at his best slam, which is of course impressive in itself, but Federer reaching another Wimbledon final was hardly a shock at the time.

Given the options available.

It's undoubtedly Vacherot's title in Shanghai.
Except for Alcaraz, all the current top players were there, including recent winners like Sinner, Djokovic, and Medvedev.
Needless to say, Vacherot's record as a Q and outside the top 200... with 9 matchs won..

Federer losing the 2019 Wimbledon final is no surprise against the reigning champion, favorite and number one seed, who was 32 years old.

What is surprising and impressive is the manner of the defeat at 38 yo.

Had he lost in three sets, it would have been considered normal; besides, he wasn't the favorite in SF against Nadal either.
