It was not long ago in my mind when most of the atp were made up by 80s borns and early 90s borns.. feels like 5-6 years max and suddenly we have the same amount of players born in the 00's within the top 10 (6/10) as there are players born in the 80s in the top 100 (6/100)

current top 100:

Born in the 00's = 36
Born in the second half 90s (1995-1999) = 48 (32 out of those born from 1997 onwards)
Born in the first half of 90s (1990-1994) = 10

Born in the 80s(<1990) = 6

1997> players make up 68/100

When did exactly happen the generational change, and how long until 00s players will make up most of the top 100? they are already overachieved, and are overrepresented within the top 10, being 36% of the top 100 but 60% of the top 10.

The 00s haven't overachieved one bit. They're supposed to take over from the 90's guys around now. It's actually a bit worrying they haven't gotten more than 36% of the top-100. Ought to have been more. Exactly 20 years ago the 80's guys had 52 of the top-100. And they had to compete against a competent decade in the 70's guys. The 00's only have to push aside the inept 90's guys (plus some 80's stragglers) and ought to have done a better job at that.

It is mostly because a lot of older players have managed to hang around the top 100 specially 50 or lower, and not be replaced by younger ones.. We can see that 20 out of the top 45 are born in the 00s, while only 16 out of the next 55 positions (rank 46-100) are occupied by 00s borns.

That was the case also 20 years ago, the percentage of 80’s guys were higher in the high end of top-100 than the low end.

There are a lot of Gen Useless stragglers in the bottom 15.

When you look at 2018 year-end rankings, you still had 8 players born in 80´s in TOP10, which was already quite insane back then. Guys in their early 30´s like Anderson, Cilic or Isner better than almost all 90´s players who were supposed to be at their ideal age. Then Next Gen players took over their Top 10 spots and now they are already in decline in their late 20´s...

Generational change to what, the NextGen (late 90's) group or the Y2K Gen (early 00's) group, because around like 2018 to maybe 2024 we had a decent amount of late 90's crop (Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Zverev, Thiem with someone like Berretini or Rublev adding there) in the Top 10, while it's only this year when the likes of Draper, Musetti and also the fall of Medvedev and Tsitsipas are happening (sorta Rublev too but he's seemingly gasping to get back).

I do think there is some difference as compared to 20 years ago that players tend to hang around longer on the tour even if they don't make it to the absolute top, because it is still possible to make a living for them. Which makes it more difficult for younger players to enter the top 100.

What generational change. Its 2 guys LOL. And Zverev could very well beat Alcaraz/Sinner back to back here at Cincy if he keeps his head together. . Heck if Djokovic was just a few years younger and with Goran as coach still, he would still be the top player in the world right now. This generation outside of Alcaraz/Sinner sucks
