So now NBA is banned in China, after Houston Rockets general manager (traditionally very Chinese club where Yao Ming played) tweeted support for Hong Kong.

Adam Silver, the NBA commissioner, said he supports guy's right to free speech. And then boom.

Now players are forbidden to even talk about that topic. (like, how is this morally different to speaking against racism, against Trump and so on, things that players do on daily basis?)

That was quick.

This kid from HK won a Hearthstone championship (it's a card game from an american company) and during his post-victory interview he sent a message in support of his people.
His title was removed, all the prize money taken away and was banned from playing the game for a year. Yeesh...

Interesting to see such a “woke” group of owners, athletes and league administrators be completely cowed like this by China.

exactly
i'm fucking speechless at the amount of hypocrisy

not that stuff surprises me after Kosovo, Crimea and a lot of other things, but i'd at least expect some real vocal support.

Chinese are so powerful when it comes to financial dealings, the guy who tweeted that deleted it so quickly and apologised as if he killed someone. crazy scenes. China rules the world.

he deleted it? fucking awful

yet the same NBA people are so quick to call Trump names, it's hilarious. Not a Trump fan but still shows difference between a democracy where you're allowed to criticize and ignore the elected president (Golden State Warriors refused the traditional meet-up as champions) and... not democracy. American citizens are ruled by foreign country. It just happened.

Next, a US company will be banned in China because a member of the staff in the US posted on Instagram a picture of his kid playing with a Winnie-the-Pooh toy.

If you have time, read all the $hit about the NBA above.
It seems it basically says what happens in China stays in China for whatever idiotic reason.

Why would pragmatic Americans ponder bizarre Chinese restriction policies while they are in China - on foreign soil...?

I heard that some movie producers in the US allegedly chose to apply certain restrictions to please communists because of money...but people are free not to watch such movies and investigate and criticize such practices.

Wow.
We feel more empowered to speak out on our own government because we know more about it, have a stake in it (taxes, even more for pro athletes), and by and large, we black people built this country to what it is. 150 years of slave labor, black over-participation in every war America has ever fought, etc.

In contrast, we don't know what is going on in HK and the history and all the intertwined things that are going on over there, plus, the guys are there to play basketball, not start a geo-political firestorm

Soon as they get back maybe they will speak more but we will see

Surely no one is going to censor them back home...but the thing is, there isn't really much to talk about, the situation is clear, they are players and professionals, and you have described the situation well.
