Mark Philippoussis' knee injury is not as bad as first had been feared, the Australian has been told.
The former US Open runner-up retired from his first round match against Sjeng Schalken after a fall and left the court in tears.

Philippoussis has already had surgery three times on his left knee and there had been fears that if the injury were serious, he would be forced to retire from the game.

An MRI scan at his home in Miami revealed that Philippoussis had hyper-extended his knee, causing a bone injury.

No surgery will be necessary but the 25-year-old will miss the rest of the season, including Australia's Davis Cup tie against India next month.

"I'm delighted the injury is not as severe as I first thought and I will be able to continue to show improvement and get better in the future," Philippoussis said in a statement.

"I'm obviously upset at having the injury and that I will have to miss the Davis Cup tie in Adelaide and the upcoming tour events," he added.

Philippoussis was recalled to the Australian Davis Cup team earlier this month after a two-year absence caused by a falling-out with the team coaches.

Bad news. But a lot better than the terrible, disgusting ones we were fearing to get.

It was absolutely horrible to see Mark go down in his match. I'm glad that it's nothing worse than hyperextension--you know he has no cartiledge in one knee

I really hope he can recover enough to play more than a spotty year, he has too much talent for it to go to waste :(

Glad that it isn't that serious. I'll always cringe if I see that footage again.

Pleased the news isn't too bad, but sorry we won't get to see him on court again this year. He's been away far too long as it is.
Sincerely hope he's fighting fit by the time the new season starts again in Aussie in Jan.

I'm happy that the injury isn't as bad as it seemed...hopefully in 2003 he'll be able to show his real potential. He's 25 already, he'd better hurry!

He just has no luck with these things

This is better than nothing, but missing the rest of the season... :sigh: Thankfully his outlook about everything these days is a lot more positive, so I hope that can pull him through

I was so upset when this happened (i was there) and my freind didn't understand why it was such a big deal  I was like "hello, if its bad he might be done!".

Thank god that isnt' the case.
