Welcome to Sony Ericsson Open 2008 powered by mt:s
(Belgrade, 11-17.02. 2008.)

Fri, 18 Jan 2008 17:01:57
The Gemax Tennis Club continues tradition of organizing the biggest and most popular tennis tournaments in Serbia. This significant men’s tournament is in the Challenger category and is being held for the sixth time. 32 competitors will take part in the tournament proper, with a further 32 battling it out in the qualifiers.
The prize fund is USD 125,000 + H, with the winner receiving 70 ATP points. To put this in perspective, players reaching the quarter-finals of ATP tournaments with USD 1mn prize funds receive the same number of points, or those reaching the semi-finals of the ATP tournament in Umag.

Between February 11th and 17th, Belgrade will have the opportunity to play host to tennis’s big names: besides Zimonjić, also taking part will be Pašanski, Troicki, Bozoljac and other big names from abroad. Janko Tipsarević is also expected to compete this year.

Serbia has become the centre of the world tennis map, and the GEMAX OPEN, that has already become a regular fixture, is now included in all tennis calendars. An additional bonus is that the tournament is the only one taking place in Europe that particular week, nor is any other international tournament being held anywhere else in the world at that time.

It is important to point out that, following a decision by the ATP, this Belgrade challenger tournament has entered the Tretorn Series +, making it one of the top 17 challenger tournaments worldwide in 2008 and the biggest and most significant one in this part of Europe.

We are proud of our tournament and its development, and of the fact that is now up there with the biggest international tournaments in the category thanks to the vision, initiative and efforts of Đorđo Antelj, who, following the ATP’s announcement that the Gemax Open was entering the Tretorn Series +, said:

“This is a great honour for Serbian tennis, and for all those who work in tennis in Serbia and in the Serbian Tennis Association. The Belgrade challenger’s inclusion in the Tretorn Series+ is the result of the hard work of all those employed at GEMAX, who, over the last few years, have put all thier energies into achieving this vision: SERBIAN TENNIS AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD. I am proud to be able to say that our vision has come true. Let’s remember who is at the top of the ATP and WTA rankings - Novak Đoković, Jelena Janković, Janko Tipsarević, Nenad Zimonjić...They had their first tennis triumphs on these very courts. It’s a great privilege for me that we can offer the citizens of Belgrade the opportunity to be proud of their city and to show that Sebria is in pace with the top tennis players in the world.“

Tennis fans will have the opportunity to enjoy watching professional tennis matches, while our young players, who will compete in the tournament without having to qualify, will have the chance to gain international experience on home turf and represent our country in the best possible manner.
Playing in the GEMAX OPEN represents a path to the top in tennis. Last year’s winner was Janko Tipsarević, while as many as three players who have taken part in our tournament are now among the world’s top 8, and played at the Masters tournament in Shanghai: Đoković, Nadal, and Gasquet.
Ančić, who is in the top ten, has also taken part.

Gemax Tennis Club has made a big contribution to tennis in Serbia, not just by organising satellite men’s tournaments, futures tournaments for men and women, the men’s challenger tournament, but also through its members, who include Jelena Janković and Nenad Zimonjić. Gemax are champions of Serbia in the under-16 category for both boys and girls. Miki Janković is Serbian under-14 champion, and besides him, Vladimir Stojković, Uroš Petronijević, Milana Spremo and Jovana Jakšić have also represented their country at youth level. These children who are gaining the expiriance on Gemax, will rule the tennis corts all over the world in future.

This tournament provides great pleasure to the tournament participants as well as to the spectators, guests and the media – and of course to the sponsors – which, beside the positive publicity, gain the amount of other effects. This year tournament will carry the name of the general sponsor which will provide publishing his name in ATP. The attention of the media and the public is permanent and persistant, from the announcement through the complete competition.

Beside the relevant national media, a great number of foreign media will be present which will dedicate significant attention to the greatest tournament on the Balcans. The eyes of the public worldwide will turn to Serbia, Belgrade and this tournament.

See you at the tournament!

The „WILD CARD“ will also be given to the following players – Luka Belic( Croatia), Nenad Zimonjic, as well as Ilija Bozoljac, whom „WILD CARD“ will ensure the participation, in case he doesn’t qualify.
