Re: Week 27: Winnetka, IL, USA [Entry List]

These US challenger fields of late are extremely disappointing. As someone who used to follow the circuit extensively, I wouldn't show up to this tournament if it were right across town. There's not a player in the draw who has a chance of doing something substantial on a big stage.

I'm surprised that Reynolds pulled out, as this would have been a great chance for him to build his ranking back up. Jared Donaldson could have breezed past many of the players in this field as well. There are futures draws more difficult than this one.

Why would they give WCs to King, Sarmiento, and Hiltzik, and not Donaldson? Donaldson has beaten King and Sarmiento (despite being several years younger), and Hiltzik just lost in the first round of this week's futures tournament yet again. I guess they're just going on Illinois ties. Lots of free points to be picked up this week...

Half of this field was in this week's US futures event, and only one of them even made it to the SFs.

What? Saville and Kokkinakis are here. And plenty of good US players too, even if they won't ever be competing to go far in Slams. I'd say this is a pretty good field. If this event were in your home town and you didn't go, I think it would say a lot about your interest in the sport.

What the heck are you on? None of these guys played in USA F18  Not a single one.
I'm not sure why you feel the need to react so violently towards me. USA F17 was this week for starters. Secondly, I used to cover the men's challenger circuit and have posted about these events on here for years, so I'm not sure where your passion comment stems from. Perhaps we were spoiled by better fields in years past, but you can't say that this isn't a weak field compared to Winnetka events in years past. The Champaign, Illinois Challenger has had better qualifying draws than this year's Winnetka main draw.

One thing that I always love in watching challengers is the opportunity to view rising stars. To that end, I stand by statement that it is wild that this tourney wouldn't grant 17 year old Donaldson a WC when he was won the last two US futures events, and instead give them to players all several years older who have crashed and burned early in these very same events.

We've had great conversations about the challenger circuit in years past, and I think that we should at least be to the point where we can converse respectfully if we disagree on an event.

I overlooked F17, so my apologies  But you still exaggerated :p

But I think the field here is really not that bad. You have to keep in mind that this is played in the second week of a Slam on a different continent. It's certainly better than the entry list for some other US Challengers (e.g. Binghamton).

Possible that Jared didn't ask for a wildcard since he plans to play Newport qualies (home tournament). His dad said that he will spend some time with family and friends while there.
