I was gobsmacked when I read this.

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2005-09/13/content_3484396.htm

BEIJING, Sept. 13 (Xinhuanet) --

World number two Rafael Nadal's debut at China Open was further postponed as his first round opponent Wang Yeu-Tzuoo from Chinese Taipei has yet arrived in Beijing for the 500,000 US dollars ATP tournament on Tuesday.

The 19-year-old Spaniard should have kicked off his China campaign on Monday as the top seed, while all of the other 15 first-round encounters are being concluded Tuesday with five matches on Monday and other 10 on day two.

Wang, ranked 160th currently in the world, informed the organizing committee for the Asian event that he could not pull away yet from some business in Turkey right then and no further details were released.

The organizers are still waiting for the ATP officials to inspect the case before deciding on whether to hand over Nadal a walkover through to the second round.

I also read this on ITV Teletext.

'Wang surprised tournament organisersby telling them he had business to conduct in Turkey and officials could decide to hand Nadal a walkover.'

My question is what happens to Wang's first round points if Nadal gets a walkover?

 Saumon  That's mean :p

Regarding the first round points... if the player decides not to play in the end, he will lose the match by default therefore his defending points will not be added. I think thats the way it works.

the content in that article isnt completely reliable  ...Wang already played a doubles match on day 2, sept 13th. he's scheldule to play against nadal on weds.

He was in d sunday final of d turkey challenger(n won it!), he left for beijing that night, but because of flight delay and the plane needs to stop in tokyo b4 arriving in beijing thats y his match was rescheduled, n they did notify the officials of d china open which they understand because of d circumstances.

And Wang's currently ranked 100th in the world.(as of mon, sept 12th)

If a player in the draw pulls out before the tournament starts and is substituted in the draw, he gets no points. It only seems logical that if you pull out of your first round match after the tournament is underway, you also get no points, even if no lucky losers are still hanging around.

This is odd. How could Wang have played his first round double match on Tuesday while doing some business in Turkey?

:yeah: Excellent quality in journalism

Many tennis fans know Wang was in the final in Istanbul. It's not that unreasonable to ask for later day to play 1st round match. Especially Wang is from Taiwan.

He should have had a walkover already!!! Why are they waiting for him???
I know. What's the big deal? If it was going to be all about that, then they should have allowed another entrant to take his spot.

to make matters worse, poor rafa even lost his luggage and his clam diggers!

that caused him to miss one practice session...

I remember watching Yoo-Tzoo's match with Roddick at Wimbledon last year, when Cliffy and PMac had no clue how to pronounce his name, and told the audience that his nickname was "Jimmy" and called him "Jimmy" the whole match. That had to be made up.

They weren't making it up: his nickname is Jimmy. He trained in the U.S. (at John Newcombe's academy: http://www.newktennis.com/) as a junior & probably picked it up there.

Here's an article about "Jimmy" winning the 14s at the 1999 Orange Bowl:

[The above link is being censored, but type in "Yeu-Tzuoo Wang Jimmy" into Google & you'll get the link.]

He's also referred to as 'Jimmy' Wang Yeu-Tzuoo on the Hong Kong Tennis Association website:

This is quite weird to me. Nadal is the no. 1 seed there and they are making him wait on this guy? Why can't someone else, maybe a qualifier, take his place? Or why can't Nadal get a walk over? It must be irritating waiting a couple of days to play a match.
