I think it is reasonable to make a comparison. Djokovic was 18 ~ 19 back then, which is about the same age and ranking as Coric now.

I just watched some videos of Djokovic in 2005 ~ 2006. We can see how he handled world Top1/Top5/Top 20 players.

6-3, 6-7, 4-6 vs Gonzalez, Cincy 2005

3-6, 6-2, 3-6 v.s. Federer, MC master.

6-7, 6-7 vs Mathieu Paris indoor 2006

Although Djokovic didn't win any of these matches, I can see:
1) Djokovic's game style was very aggressive back then. He was not just waiting for opponents errors.
2) Djokovic had very solid ground strokes. And clearly he's very smart and he knew how to utilize them even back then.
3) Still we can see that for some points Djokovic didn't play well. He has improved his movement, serve and forehand so much since then.

My observations:
1) A defensive game style helps young player have good results (e.g. reach top 30) at younger age.
But this style makes it harder for those players to reach to Top. (e.g. Murray, Harrison, etc.)
By contrast, aggressive players usually mature in later age but they really have better chance to reach the top (e.g. Fed, Pete Sampras, Stan Wawrinka).

(btw, I think it is easier to convert an over-aggressive player into a balanced player)

Coric is very different from Djokovic for this point. Djokovic had a very aggressive style when he was young.

2) Djokovic's absolute level in 2006 is much higher than Coric now.

3) Djokovic's level has improved so much since 2005 ~ 2006. Most players cannot improve by that much.

=> The chance for Coric to be a top player is not high.

If Novak got to be Coric now he would probably end up with like 20 slams. Coric does not need to be as good as Novak to have a very successful career.

Beyond that, you cannot use Novak to extrapolate Coric's success. And Murray has always had serious holes in his game. It isn't just his aggressiveness. Rather, it's his second serve, mental strength, and lack of a strong putaway shot.

Another pathetic harebrained attempt to discredit Borna by the coterie of Coric haters. :wavey:

You don't need to have Djokovic's potential to became a top player.
That Coric will never be as good/win as much as him it's already well known.

Better compare him with Murray, more similar game style. Novak was very attacking player back then.
