no, it's not. where'd you get that?

@ g4

ok, if you combine all european countries the initial statement is probably right. i thought bilbo was talking about separate nations takung over america's spot.
China's growth over the last decade is astounding. Nothing indicates they're gonna stop growing, even though the rate will probably diminish over the next years. They're definitely the second single economic power in the world right now.

smouldering fires both on the political (tibet, human rights, rural flight etc.) as well as on the economic front (inflation, stock bubble, aging of the population etc.) are indicators.

and china would need another 10-20 years to overtake america as the no.1 even if they kept growing like today and america simply stalled.

Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates  One of those will rank no.1 sooner or later in GDP.
holy crap...

how would that even be possible? they'd have to import like...500 million people in order to be even ready to compete capita-wise. do you have any idea what the gdp is?

If you don't count the small offshore tax havens (Bermuda, Jersey, Guernsey, Cayman Islands) half of the top 10 are oil exporting countries:
1 Luxembourg $ 80,800 2007 est.
2 Qatar $ 75,900 2007 est.
Bermuda $ 69,900 2004 est.
Jersey $ 57,000 2005 est.
3 Norway $ 55,600 2007 est.
4 Kuwait $ 55,300 2007 est.
5 United Arab Emirates $ 55,200 2007 est.
6 Singapore $ 48,900 2007 est.
7 United States $ 46,000 2007 est.
8 Ireland $ 45,600 2007 est.
Guernsey $ 44,600 2005
9 Equatorial Guinea $ 44,100 2007 est.
Cayman Islands $ 43,800 2004 est.
10 Hong Kong $ 42,000 2007 est.

Luxembourg and Ireland have been helped by EU subsidies.

yeah, but that's just a list of per capita gdp. i think this thread was about the nominal gdp, wasn't it? i mean, we've talked about china for example. that talk wouldn't have made any sense whatsoever if bilbo's comments concerned the per capita gdp. china will never even be close to the top 10 on your list.

Like I mentioned before, the EU only overtook the US because they added more countries to their membership. Not because their economy is so much better. :p

USA + Canada > EU + Switzerland + Norway

Therefore:

North America > Europe

;)
